Why visit Independence?

Independence is a city in western Missouri, part of the Kansas City metropolitan area, and is most famous as the hometown of President Harry S. Truman. The city played a significant role in westward expansion as the starting point of the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe Trails. Independence was also the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) from 1831 to 1839, and it remains an important site for several Mormon denominations. With a population of about 116,000, Independence maintains a small-town charm while benefiting from its proximity to Kansas City (just 10 miles east).

The city's historic square, centered on the Harry S. Truman National Historic Site and the Truman Library and Museum, anchors the downtown area. Victorian homes, historic sites, and the winding trails of the National Frontier Trails Museum tell the story of American westward migration. Independence has a humid continental climate with hot, humid summers (80s–90s°F) and cold winters (20s–40s°F). Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons, with mild temperatures and fewer crowds at the historic attractions.
