Why visit Gulf Islands National Seashore?
Gulf Islands National Seashore is a 12-unit National Park that protects barrier islands along the Gulf Coast of Mississippi and Florida. Established in 1971, the park preserves pristine white sand beaches, historic military fortifications, and unique dune ecosystems that were shaped by centuries of hurricanes and ocean currents. The Mississippi district, centered around the Davis Bayou Area and accessible barrier islands, offers some of the finest undeveloped beach experiences on the Gulf of Mexico.
The park's landscape is defined by bright white quartz sand — washed down from the Appalachian Mountains over millennia — forming towering dunes held in place by sea oats and beach grass. Four of the seven world sea turtle species nest here, and twenty endangered species call the park home, including the famous Perdido Key beach mouse. The Mississippi islands — Cat Island, East Ship Island, Horn Island, and Petit Bois Island — provide quiet retreats for camping, birdwatching, and fishing far from any development.
Climate is subtropical: sunny and warm most of the year with humidity peaking June through September. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, and hurricane season runs June through November. Many areas are periodically closed due to storm damage, so always check the park website before visiting. The best time to visit is spring (March–May) or fall (September–November) when temperatures are more comfortable.

The drive from New Orleans is approximately 90 minutes via I-10 East. From Biloxi, it is roughly 15 minutes west on US-90.
The Davis Bayou Area is the only accessible mainland portion of the Mississippi District and can be explored on foot or by bike via the 15.5-mile round-trip Live Oaks Bicycle Route, which connects to Ocean Springs. Accessing the barrier islands requires private boat or the Pan Isles passenger ferry (Gulfport Yacht Harbor, +1-866-466-7386), which runs March through October to West Ship Island. Horn Island, Petit Bois Island, and East Ship Island are open year-round to private boaters.
What are the things to do?
Davis Bayou Area: The only mainland unit in Mississippi, offering nature trails, a boat ramp, fishing pier, and picnic pavilions with views of marshlands and wildlife.
Fort Massachusetts: Located on West Ship Island, twelve miles off the Mississippi coast. Built in the 1850s, it saw action during the Civil War. Ranger-guided tours offered March–October. Accessible by ferry from Gulfport.
Cat Island: The western two miles are within the park boundary and open to private boaters year-round. Known for its unique double-barrier island formation.
Horn Island: A 22-mile uninhabited barrier island popular for primitive camping, beachcombing, and birdwatching. Open year-round to private boaters.
Petit Bois Island: Mississippi's easternmost barrier island, accessible year-round by private boat. Popular for fishing and isolated beach camping.
Island Camping: All islands except West Ship Island offer primitive camping. Pack in all supplies, including fresh water. Check weather and tide conditions before departing.
Birdwatching: Over 280 bird species have been documented. Spring and fall migrations bring warblers, shorebirds, and seabirds. The Davis Bayou area is particularly productive.
Fishing: Both surf and bay fishing are popular. Redfish, speckled trout, and flounder are common catches.
Beachcombing: The pristine white sand beaches yield shells, sea glass, and sand dollars, especially after storms.
Biking: The Live Oaks Bicycle Route in the Davis Bayou Area offers a scenic 15.5-mile round-trip on paved and unpaved paths.
