Why visit Abbeville?
Abbeville is an agricultural and seafood processing hub in South Central Louisiana, serving as the parish seat of Vermilion Parish. The city of 11,100 residents sits along the Vermilion River (Bayou Vermilion), 21 miles (34 km) south of Lafayette. French Capuchin missionary Père Antoine Désiré Mégret purchased the land in 1843 and laid out the town using a traditional French village plan centered on Magdalen Square. Cajun settlers originally established farms in the surrounding Vermilion Parish countryside during the late 1760s following their expulsion from Acadia (modern Nova Scotia).
The local economy centers on sugarcane farming, cattle ranching, and Gulf Coast seafood production. Abbeville processes commercial catches of oysters, blue crab, and crawfish from nearby Vermilion Bay. Downtown operations include Steen's Cane Syrup Mill, which has manufactured open-kettle sugarcane syrup on Main Street since 1910. Country music singer Sammy Kershaw was born in Abbeville, and the town maintains deep roots in Cajun French language traditions and Acadian culinary customs.
The climate is humid subtropical. Summers (June through September) bring hot, muggy conditions with daytime highs averaging 90°F–93°F (32°C–34°C) and regular afternoon thunderstorms. Winters (December through February) are mild, with average highs of 62°F (17°C) and lows of 42°F (5°C). Annual precipitation averages 58 inches (1,470 mm), distributed evenly throughout the year. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30.
