Lexington
Kentucky, United States
Why visit Lexington?
Lexington is the second largest city in Kentucky, known as the Horse Capital of the World. Located in the Bluegrass Region, it has traditionally been dominated by the horse industry and is also heavily influenced by the University of Kentucky, the state's flagship university and the city's largest employer. The horse industry has shaped Lexington's culture and scenic beauty, with hundreds of horse farms dotting the surrounding countryside. The University of Kentucky and Transylvania University contribute to a college town atmosphere with a richer and more diverse culture than many expect from its size.
Founded in 1775, 17 years before Kentucky became a state, Lexington was named when settlers received news of the Battles of Lexington and Concord. It was one of the first cities in the country to enact urban growth legislation, protecting the Bluegrass Region's picturesque landscapes from suburban encroachment. Lexington's compact downtown is surrounded by historic neighborhoods, and the city enjoys a moderate climate with warm summers (highs in the mid-80s to low 90s°F / 29-33°C) and cool winters (highs in the 30s-40s°F / 0-9°C).
