About Abilene
Abilene is a small city in the Flint Hills region of central Kansas, best known as the boyhood home of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and for its rich Old West heritage. With a population of roughly 6,500, the city offers a surprising depth of history and charm for its size. Abilene was once a major cattle town at the end of the Chisholm Trail in the 1870s, and echoes of that frontier era remain in its downtown architecture and museums.
The climate features hot summers (temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F from June through August) and cold winters with occasional snowfall. Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons to visit, with mild temperatures ideal for walking tours and outdoor activities. The city is laid out in a grid pattern centered on a modest downtown along Buckeye Avenue and Campbell Street, with residential neighborhoods spreading outward. The Abilene Convention & Visitors Bureau (201 NW Second St, +1 785 263-2231) can help plan your visit.
