Urbana
Illinois, United States
Why visit Urbana?
Urbana is the older of the twin cities forming the Champaign-Urbana metropolitan area in central Illinois. Founded in 1833, Urbana predates Champaign (originally named "West Urbana") by over 20 years—Champaign grew up along a railroad built three miles west of downtown Urbana. The University of Illinois campus straddles both cities, though Urbana's eastern edge borders the campus core. Urbana is seen as the more politically liberal and pastoral of the two towns, with a strong independent business community and an arts-oriented character.
The community of about 220,000 (combined with Champaign and Savoy) sits amongst corn and soybean fields about 150 miles south of Chicago. The university's 43,000 students infuse the area with cultural energy. The climate features hot, humid summers and cold winters, with spring and fall offering the most pleasant weather. Urbana's downtown along Center Street and Illinois Street has a distinctly different, more bohemian feel than Champaign's busier commercial district.
