Salmon
Idaho, United States
Why visit Salmon?
Salmon is the seat of Lemhi County, a remote mountain town embedded in the ridges and valleys of the Rocky Mountains in central Idaho. It seems worlds away from the rest of civilization — a place where the Lewis and Clark expedition once passed through with the help of Sacajawea. Today Salmon has a dichotomous vibe: it caters to wealthy visitors seeking outfitter-type excursions, dude ranch vacations, and whitewater rafting on the Salmon River, while simultaneously being home to many conservative, provincial residents. The result is a unique blend of rugged frontier culture and premium outdoor experiences.
Salmon sits at the intersection of US Route 93 and ID Route 28. The Salmon River and the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness — the largest expanse of contiguous wilderness in the lower 48 states — beckon nearby, making it a mecca for whitewater rafting outfitters, dude ranches, and guide operators. The cost of goods can be higher here than in more connected Idaho towns.
The climate is mountain continental with cold, snowy winters and warm, dry summers. Summer is the peak season for outdoor activities. Winters are harsh and access can be limited by snow on mountain passes.

By Car / Road
Salmon is at the intersection of US Route 93 and ID Route 28. For most visitors, driving is the only practical option. US-93 connects southward to Challis and ultimately to the Boise area, and northward toward the Montana border. ID-28 connects westward toward Challis and Mackay. Roads are generally two-lane highways through mountain terrain; winter conditions can be severe.
A car is essential for seeing natural attractions outside of town. There is no public transit.
