Why visit Naples (Florida)?

Naples is a small, affluent city of roughly 19,000 residents on Florida's southwest Gulf Coast in Collier County, though its metro area swells considerably with part-time residents and visitors. Self-styled the "Golf Capital of the World," Naples claims the most golf holes of any city in Florida and the second-highest holes per capita in the entire country — a statistic locals repeat with genuine pride. Its defining geography is an 10-mile (16 km) strip of white-sand Gulf beach that consistently ranks among Florida's cleanest, backed by low-rise streets of pastel-coloured boutiques, art galleries, and fine-dining restaurants. The pace is deliberately unhurried, the aesthetic conspicuously upscale, and the demographic skews older and wealthy, making Naples feel quite different from the spring-break chaos of Florida's Atlantic coast.

The economy rests on tourism, real estate, and a large retired population that gives the city its manicured, tranquil character. Proximity to the Everglades and Ten Thousand Islands draws ecotourists who balance resort-style relaxation with airboat rides and kayak expeditions into one of North America's most extraordinary wilderness areas. Historic Old Naples — the compact original grid near the pier — mixes heritage wooden cottages with galleries and sidewalk cafés, providing the city's most walkable and characterful district.

Climate divides into two distinct seasons. From May through October, high temperatures average around 92 °F (33 °C) and afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily. This is the off-season: lower prices, fewer crowds, and intense humidity. November through April is the dry season — the time most visitors choose — with daily highs around 74 °F (23 °C), clear skies, and comfortable evenings. Peak season runs December through April; expect higher prices and traffic during these months.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The primary gateway is Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), located approximately 30 miles (48 km) north of Naples in Fort Myers. It is well served by major US carriers including Delta, American, United, Southwest, and JetBlue, with many non-stop routes from the Northeast and Midwest. The drive from RSW to Naples takes 45–60 minutes via I-75 South. Car rental is the standard option and desks are located at the airport. Taxis and rideshare services (Uber, Lyft) are available but will cost roughly $60–90 for the journey.

For private and charter aviation, Naples Airport (APF) sits just 2 nautical miles (4 km) northeast of the central business district and handles the most direct access to the city. Marco Island Executive Airport (MKY) lies 15 miles south of Naples and serves smaller charter and private aircraft as well.

By Car / Road

Naples is easy to reach by car. From Miami, follow I-75 West (Alligator Alley) then south on US-41 (Tamiami Trail) — roughly 120 miles and about 2 hours in normal traffic. From Fort Myers, I-75 South takes approximately 40 minutes. From Tampa, allow around 2.5 hours via I-75 South. Traffic on I-75 can be heavy during peak season weekends. US-41 (Tamiami Trail) is the main north–south artery through the city and connects to nearly all shopping and dining.

Greyhound serves nearby Bonita Springs, and RedCoach operates a stop on the outskirts of Naples, making budget bus travel possible if you arrange local transport at the other end.

A rental car is the most practical way to explore Naples and its surroundings. The city is spread out, and distances to the Everglades, Marco Island, and outer beaches make a car close to essential for anything beyond Old Naples.

Within the historic core — roughly bounded by the pier, Fifth Avenue South, and Third Street South — walking is pleasant and most dining, shopping, and beach access is within easy reach on foot. Cycling is viable on many main roads, which have dedicated bike lanes, though lanes see relatively light use and the summer heat makes cycling demanding.

Collier Area Transit (CAT) provides local bus service across Naples and Collier County, with fares around $1.50, though routes and frequency are oriented toward residents rather than visitors and are of limited usefulness for most tourist itineraries.

Rideshare (Uber and Lyft) is reliably available throughout the city and makes a reasonable alternative to driving for evenings out.

What are the things to do?

Naples City Pier (25 12th Ave S) — Naples' most iconic landmark, the original thousand-foot-long wooden pier has stood in various forms since the late 19th century. It was destroyed by Hurricane Ian in 2022 and reconstruction is underway. Even without the pier structure itself, the beach at the pier's base remains outstanding for sunset watching and dolphin spotting in the surf.

Tin City — Built as a working fisherman's wharf on the Gordon River in downtown Naples, Tin City is now a waterfront collection of air-conditioned shops selling art, clothing, gifts, and nautical trinkets. It retains the bones of its industrial past while serving tourists. A reliable stop for browsing and people-watching on the water.

Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens (1590 Goodlette Rd; +1 239-262-5409; daily 9AM–5PM) — A nationally accredited zoo integrated into a historic botanical garden. Highlights include Tiger Forest, Panther Glade, and African Oasis, plus wildlife presentations throughout the day and a boat cruise past islands of free-roaming primates. The lush tropical setting distinguishes it from more conventional zoos.

Clam Pass Park (Seagate Drive & Crayton Road; +1 239-252-4000; 8AM to sundown) — A 35-acre coastal park reached via a three-quarter-mile boardwalk winding through a mangrove forest of red, white, and black mangroves. The mangrove tunnel opening onto open beach is genuinely beautiful. A tram is available for those who prefer not to walk. Beachside snack bar and full bar at the far end.

Vanderbilt Beach (north Naples; +1 239-597-6196) — A broad, clean stretch of Gulf beach with freshwater showers, lifeguards, grills, picnic tables, a boat ramp, and an observation tower. Extra parking in the lot adjacent to the Ritz-Carlton. A popular alternative to the busier beaches near the pier.

Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park (11135 Gulfshore Dr; +1 239-597-6196; 8AM to sunset) — One of southwest Florida's finest beach parks, with excellent shelling, swimming, and wildlife. Parking fills early, particularly on weekends; arrive before 9AM in season or expect a wait of an hour or more to enter.

Historic Old Naples — The city's original residential grid, immediately west of US-41 between the pier and Third Street South. Lined with mature tropical trees, historic wooden houses, galleries, and small restaurants. Worth a slow stroll.

Everglades Tours — Naples is one of the best departure points for the Everglades. Numerous operators run airboat rides, kayak tours, and guided wildlife excursions into the Everglades and Ten Thousand Islands, Florida's largest and most complex coastal wilderness. A full-day trip easily fills an itinerary.

Golf — With more holes than any other Florida city and over 80 courses within Collier County, Naples is unambiguously golf country. Courses range from public-access options to PGA-level resort layouts. Tiburon Golf Club (2620 Tiburon Dr; +1 239-594-2040; daily 7AM–6PM) is a top-tier public-play PGA Tour venue in North Naples — worth visiting even just to drive through and view the course landscape.

Fishing — Naples has experienced guides for inshore, offshore, and fly fishing. The Gordon River, the Gulf beaches at dawn and dusk, and the canal network are productive spots for independent anglers. Marinas and tackle shops throughout the city offer boat rentals and local advice. Note that a Florida fishing licence is required for most fishing.

Dolphin and Manatee Boat Tours — Multiple operators run narrated tours through the bays and estuaries around Naples where bottlenose dolphins and manatees are reliably spotted, particularly in cooler months. Check the tourist information offices near Fifth Avenue South for current operator listings.

Shopping on Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South — Both districts have evolved into Naples' cultural spine: galleries, boutiques, sidewalk cafés, and fine dining along palm-lined streets a few blocks from the Gulf. Fifth Avenue South is slightly more commercial; Third Street South skews more towards galleries and lifestyle boutiques. A pleasant afternoon wander.

Marco Island Day Trip — Just 15 miles south via US-41 and CR-951, Marco Island offers another Gulf beach experience with a more resort-island feel and some excellent waterfront seafood restaurants.

Where to eat?

Naples dining leans upscale: stone crab, fresh Gulf fish, and steakhouses dominate the fine-dining tier, while casual options cluster around the pier and along the main avenues. The shoulder and off-seasons (May–October) bring genuine deals at places that maintain quality year-round.

Truluck's Seafood, Steak and Crab House (698 4th Ave S; +1 239-530-3131) — A Naples institution for Florida stone crab claws (in season October through May), fresh fish, and a refined but relaxed dining room. Prices are high but the stone crab quality justifies it. Book ahead in season.

Tommy Bahama's Restaurant & Bar (1220 3rd Street; +1 239-643-6889; lunch from 11AM, dinner daily) — Tropical-island ambience in Old Naples. Popular for coconut shrimp, seafood, and cocktails. Live entertainment nightly. On the pricier side. Reservations recommended in peak season.

Shula's Steak House (5111 Tamiami Trail N, in the Hilton Naples; +1 239-430-4999; 6:30AM–10PM) — Upscale steak restaurant honouring the 1972 Miami Dolphins undefeated season. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A reliable high-end option accessible off US-41.

McCabe's Irish Pub & Grill (699 5th Ave S; +1 239-403-7170) — An authentic Irish pub on Fifth Avenue South serving good, unpretentious food and live music. A lower-key and more affordable option in the middle of the upscale strip.

Mel's Diner — Naples (3650 Tamiami Trail N; +1 239-643-9898; Su–Th 6:30AM–9PM, F–Sa 6:30AM–9:30PM) — Classic American diner: reliable, affordable, and open early for breakfast. A practical counterpoint to the prevailing fine-dining tone.

Food and Thought (Gateway Plaza; +1 239-213-2222; 9AM–8PM) — Southwest Florida's organic market and restaurant in one. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. One of the few genuinely health-focused options in the city, at reasonable prices ($6–14).

Where to drink?

Sunset Beach Bar (851 Gulf Shore Blvd N, in the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club; +1 239-261-2222) — A beachfront bar that earns its name: the Gulf of Mexico sunsets viewed from here are spectacular. Once named Naples' best beach bar by the Travel Channel. Live entertainment most evenings.

Blue Martini (9114 Strada Place Suite 12105; +1 239-591-2583; daily 4PM–2AM) — The city's dedicated cocktail bar and nightlife anchor, with over 25 martini variations, a tapas menu, and live entertainment. In the Mercato complex in North Naples. The liveliest late-night option in a city that otherwise quiets down early.

The Turtle Club at Vanderbilt Beach (9225 Gulf Shore Drive; lunch daily 11AM–2:45PM; dinner Su–Th 5–9PM, F–Sa 5–10PM) — Beachfront restaurant-bar at the Vanderbilt Beach Resort, focused on fresh seafood and steaks. The Gulf-facing position makes it an excellent spot for a drink at sunset. No reservations for lunch.

Craft brewing and wine bars have expanded in Naples in recent years; the strip around Fifth Avenue South and Mercato contains several wine-focused establishments worth exploring. Water from the tap is safe throughout the city.

Mid-range Hilton Naples (5111 Tamiami Trail N) — A full-service hotel on the Tamiami Trail with pool, on-site Shula's Steak House, and convenient access to both the shopping districts and the beach. Rates from around $180–250/night in season.

What should you buy?

Fifth Avenue South is the city's most celebrated shopping street — a walkable strip of high-end clothing, jewellery, home décor, and gallery art stretching through central Old Naples. Parking is genuinely limited; arrive early or use the CAT bus from outlying areas.

Third Street South gathers around 100 stores including fine-clothing boutiques, gift shops, restaurants, and galleries. The surrounding blocks, particularly along 8th Street, hold an open-air atmosphere with sculptures, fountains, and a strong concentration of art galleries.

Mercato (9123 Strada Place; +1 239-594-9400; M–Sa 10AM–9PM, Su noon–6PM) is an upscale mixed-use development at the intersection of Vanderbilt Beach Road and Tamiami Trail North. It combines fashion and lifestyle retail with dining and a cinema in a pleasant open-air format.

Waterside Shops (5415 Tamiami Trail N; +1 239-598-1605; M–Sa 10AM–7PM, Su noon–6PM) offers luxury retail anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom, set in a lushly landscaped outdoor mall with a 550-foot hand-laid stone wall and cascading water features. Over 60 shops and restaurants.

Miromar Outlets (I-75, Exit 123, Corkscrew Road; +1 239-948-3766; Sa 10AM–9PM, Su 11AM–6PM) is a large outdoor outlet mall near Estero, roughly 25 minutes north. Major brand outlet stores at significant discounts.

Where to go next?

Marco Island (15 miles / 25 min south) — The northernmost of the Ten Thousand Islands, with a long Gulf beach, excellent restaurants on the water, kayaking through mangroves, and a more laid-back resort atmosphere than Naples.

Everglades City (35 miles / 45 min southeast) — Gateway to Everglades National Park and the Ten Thousand Islands. Airboat tours, kayak rentals, and authentic Floridian fishing-village character. A strong half-day or full-day trip from Naples.

Fort Myers (30 miles / 40 min north) — The nearest city, home to the Edison and Ford Winter Estates museum, the River District's growing dining and bar scene, and Fort Myers Beach. More casual and less expensive than Naples.

Sanibel Island (55 miles / 70 min north) — World-famous for shell collecting. A protected barrier island with outstanding nature preserves (J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge), calm-water beaches, and a low-key island lifestyle. No high-rises allowed.

Miami (120 miles / 2 hr east) — The obvious gateway city for international visitors arriving via Miami International Airport. Day trips are feasible for art-deco South Beach or Wynwood, but an overnight stay makes better use of the distance.

Key West (210 miles / 3.5–4 hr southeast) — A long but manageable drive via US-1 through the Florida Keys for those combining a Gulf Coast beach stay with the entirely different atmosphere of the southernmost point.
