Why visit Clearwater?

Clearwater sits on Florida's central Gulf Coast within Pinellas County, directly across Tampa Bay from Tampa. The municipality divides into two main sections: the mainland downtown and residential districts, and the barrier island resort strip of Clearwater Beach. The two areas are connected across Clearwater Harbor by the 2-mile (3.2 km) Clearwater Memorial Causeway (State Road 60). Travelers visit primarily for the expansive stretches of fine quartz sand, calm Gulf waters, and extensive water sports infrastructure.

Originally inhabited by Tocobaga indigenous communities and later developed around the Seminole War military post of Fort Harrison in 1835, the settlement expanded into a winter resort following the arrival of Henry B. Plant's railroad in 1888. Today, downtown Clearwater borders the harborfront with cultural spaces like Coachman Park, while the barrier island hosts high-rise beach resorts, fishing charters, and open-air dining along Gulfview Boulevard and Mandalay Avenue.

The city has a humid subtropical climate characterized by hot, humid summers and dry, mild winters. Average summer high temperatures reach 90°F to 92°F (32°C to 33°C) with regular afternoon thunderstorms from June through September. Winter daytime highs range between 70°F and 75°F (21°C to 24°C) and nightly lows stay around 53°F to 58°F (12°C to 14°C). The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30.
