Buena Vista is a small town in Chaffee County, south central Colorado, situated at about 7,966 feet elevation in the Upper Arkansas River Valley. The town sits at the intersection of US-24 and US-285, making it accessible from multiple directions.

The area enjoys a semi-arid climate with over 300 days of sunshine per year. Summer temperatures reach the 70s-80s°F, while winter brings cold and snow with highs in the 30s-40s°F. The Arkansas River provides Class III-V whitewater rafting opportunities, particularly through Browns Canyon, which is one of the premier commercially raftable stretches in the country. The town has a laid-back, outdoorsy character with a growing food and craft beverage scene.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Colorado Springs Airport (COS) is the closest full-service airport, about 100 miles east. Denver International Airport (DEN) is approximately 130 miles northeast. Neither airport has direct shuttle service to Buena Vista.

By Car / Road

Buena Vista is at the intersection of US-24 and US-285. From Denver, take US-285 south through the mountains (about 2.5 hours). From Colorado Springs, take US-24 west (about 2 hours). From Salida, take US-285 south (about 30 minutes). The roads are paved but mountainous.

Buena Vista is a small, walkable town. Most restaurants, shops, and services are along Main Street. For outdoor activities in the surrounding area, a car is essential. Local outfitters offer transportation to rafting and hiking put-in points.

What are the things to do?

  • Browns Canyon: A nationally designated wilderness area along the Arkansas River, offering world-class whitewater rafting and spectacular canyon scenery.

  • Twin Lakes: Scenic alpine lakes at the base of Mount Elbert, Colorado's highest peak. Popular for fishing, kayaking, and camping.

  • Collegiate Peaks: The Sawatch Range skyline features several 14,000-foot peaks, including Mount Elbert (14,439 ft) and Mount Massive (14,421 ft).

  • Historic Downtown Buena Vista: A charming Main Street with Victorian-era buildings housing shops, restaurants, and galleries.

  • Whitewater Rafting: The Arkansas River through Browns Canyon offers Class III-IV rapids. Multiple outfitters operate in the area. Season peaks May through July.

  • Fishing: The Arkansas River and surrounding lakes offer excellent fly fishing for rainbow and brown trout.

  • Hot Springs: Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort, about 15 miles south, offers natural hot springs pools.

  • Hiking: Trails lead to alpine lakes and 14,000-foot peaks in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness.
