Why visit Fresno?
Fresno is the largest city in California's San Joaquin Valley, situated in the geographic center of the state. With a population of approximately 530,000 (and nearly 1 million in Fresno County), it serves as the agricultural capital of one of the world's most productive farming regions. Many visitors pass through Fresno en route to Yosemite National Park, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, and other Sierra Nevada destinations, but the city itself has developed into a worthwhile stop with its own cultural offerings.
The city has a strong connection to its Armenian-American heritage — Fresno is home to one of the largest Armenian communities outside of Armenia — and the writer William Saroyan, Fresno's most famous son, is celebrated with a local theater. The city also has a large and vibrant Hmong community. The Save Mart Center at California State University, Fresno ("Fresno State") hosts concerts and major events.
Fresno has a semi-arid climate with hot, dry summers and mild, moist winters. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F (38°C), with July and August averaging highs near 98°F (37°C). Winters are cool and rainy, with December and January highs around 55°F (13°C) and lows near 40°F (4°C). Rainfall is concentrated from November through March, with nearly zero precipitation from May through September. The best time to visit is spring (March–May) when temperatures are comfortable and the surrounding farmland is green, or fall (September–November) after the summer heat breaks.

The bus system covers most of the metropolitan area with routes running from early morning to late evening. Ride-hailing apps (Uber and Lyft) are widely available.
