Wales (Cymru) is a country of dramatic landscapes, ancient Celtic culture, and warm hospitality, forming one of the four constituent nations of the United Kingdom. Bordered by England to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Wales is characterised by its sweeping mountain ranges, spectacular coastline, and more than 600 castles — the highest density of castles per square mile in the world. The country measures just 275 km from north to south, yet packs extraordinary diversity into its 20,779 km².
Wales has three national parks — Snowdonia (Eryri) in the north-west, Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) in the south, and Pembrokeshire Coast (Arfordir Penfro) in the south-west — along with four Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Welsh language (Cymraeg), spoken by around 28% of the population, is a living, everyday language that visitors will hear on the streets, read on bilingual road signs, and encounter on S4C (the Welsh-language TV channel). Cardiff (Caerdydd), the capital since 1955, is a dynamic modern city built around a medieval core.
Wales's industrial heritage — coal, slate, iron, and steel — shaped its valleys and communities. The remains of that era, including the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Blaenavon Ironworks and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, are fascinating attractions today. Meanwhile, the country's natural beauty draws millions of visitors for hiking, surfing, mountain biking, and kayaking. Wales offers a genuinely distinct character from the rest of the UK, shaped by its language, its landscape, and its fiercely proud identity.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Wales is from May through September, when the weather is warmest (15–22 °C in lowland areas) and the days are long. July and August are the busiest months, especially in Snowdonia, the Pembrokeshire coast, and Cardiff. Spring (April–May) offers green landscapes and wildflowers, while autumn (September–October) brings spectacular colours and fewer crowds.
Wales has a maritime climate: mild but wet. The west coast receives over 1,500 mm of rain annually, while the east (near the English border) is drier at around 800 mm. The Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia are notably wetter than the coast. Winter (November–February) can be harsh in the mountains with snow on higher ground, but coastal areas remain mild (2–8 °C). The Wales Rally GB (October) and the Hay Festival (May) are major annual events.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Transport for Wales operates most train services within Wales, with main lines connecting Cardiff to Swansea (1 hr), Holyhead (3.5 hr), Manchester (2.5 hr), and Shrewsbury (1.5 hr). The narrow-gauge heritage railways are a unique attraction — the Ffestiniog, Welsh Highland, Snowdon Mountain, and Talyllyn railways offer unforgettable journeys through stunning scenery.
Great Western Railway links Cardiff to London Paddington (2 hr) and Bristol (45 min). Bus services cover most towns, with TrawsCymru providing the main cross-country routes. Driving is the most practical way to explore rural Wales. The A470 runs the length of the country from Cardiff to Llandudno (3.5 hr), through the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia. The A55 expressway along the north coast connects to Holyhead for ferries to Ireland.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Welsh cuisine draws on the country's rugged landscape and coastal waters. Signature dishes include cawl (a hearty lamb and vegetable stew), Welsh rarebit (melted cheese on toast with mustard and ale), laverbread (seaweed puree, often served with bacon and cockles), and Welsh cakes (griddle-baked currant scones). Anglesey is famous for its high-quality shellfish — oysters, mussels, and lobster.
Must-try dining: Y Polyn (Carmarthenshire) for modern Welsh cuisine; The Walnut Tree (Abergavenny), a Michelin-starred institution; Potted Pig (Cardiff) for excellent seasonal menus; The Felin Fach Griffin (Brecon) for cosy gastropub dining. Aberystwyth's farmers' market is excellent for local produce. Vegetarian-friendly options are increasingly available, especially in Cardiff and the university towns.
What is the culture like?
Wales has a rich cultural calendar. The National Eisteddfod (first week of August) is Europe's largest cultural festival celebrating Welsh language and culture. The Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod (July) brings performers from around the world. The Hay Festival (May) is one of the world's great literary festivals. Beaumaris on Anglesey hosts an annual arts festival in August.
St David's Day (1 March) is Wales's national day, celebrated with parades, concerts, and the wearing of daffodils and leeks. Rugby union is the national sport — match days at Cardiff's Principality Stadium are unforgettable, with the singing of 'Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau' (the Welsh national anthem) a spine-tingling experience. Traditional male voice choirs and folk music thrive across the country.
Travelling during a festival? We'll plan around the crowds.
