Kropyvnytskyi
Kirovohradska oblast, Ukraine
Why visit Kropyvnytskyi?
Kropyvnytskyi (formerly Kirovohrad before 2016, and Yelyzavethrad before 1924) is a city of approximately 220,000 people in central Ukraine, serving as the administrative centre of Kirovohradska Oblast. Founded in 1754 as a fortress settlement during the colonisation of New Serbia, it grew rapidly in the 19th century as a trade and manufacturing centre. The city bears the name of Marko Kropyvnytskyi, a foundational figure in Ukrainian theatre. Today, Kropyvnytskyi is a pleasantly green city with wide boulevards, a lively central square, and a relaxed pace of life. It is the birthplace of the Ukrainian professional theatre and remains a cultural hub for central Ukraine. The city's architecture spans imperial classicism, Art Nouveau, and Soviet modernism.
