Seydi

Seydi is a small town in central Lebap Province, Turkmenistan, located on the north bank of the Amu-Darya River about 70 km north of Turkmenabat. The town is named after the Turkmen poet Seydi (Seyitnazar Seydi), a 19th-century literary figure and warrior.

Seydi lies in the fertile Amu-Darya floodplain, an important cotton-growing region. The town has a small port on the river and serves as a local market centre. The surrounding landscape is flat and agricultural, with cotton fields stretching to the horizon. The town's proximity to the Amu-Darya makes it greener and cooler than the surrounding Karakum Desert.

The climate is arid continental: very hot summers (35–45°C), cool winters (0–10°C). Spring and autumn are the best times to visit.

By Plane

Turkmenabat International Airport (CRZ) is about 70 km south. A taxi costs 50–70 TMT and takes about 1 hour.

By Train

The main railway line between Türkmenabat and Dashoguz passes through Seydi. The station is on the eastern edge of town. Trains run several times daily.

By Car / Road

Seydi is on the P-29 road connecting Turkmenabat with the north. Shared taxis from Turkmenabat cost about 10 TMT per person and take 1 hour. A private taxi costs around 50 TMT.

The town is walkable. Taxis are available for short trips (5–10 TMT).

• Amu-Darya River — The river's broad channel is visible from the northern edge of town; it is an impressive sight, especially in spring flood.

• Seydi Bazaar — A small but lively market serving the agricultural community.

• Cotton fields — Vast fields surround the town; they are especially photogenic at harvest time (September–October).

• River walk — A path along the Amu-Darya offers views of the water and passing river traffic.

• Rural cycling — The flat farmland roads around Seydi are ideal for cycling.

• Seydi Çayhanasy — A teahouse serving palaw, shashlik, and shurpa. Meals 10–15 TMT.

Tea is the standard. Bottled water is essential.

• Budget: Basic accommodation may be available at a local guesthouse. 30–50 TMT per night.

The bazaar sells fresh local produce, especially melons, tomatoes, and cottonseed oil.

• Turkmenabat (70 km south, 1 hr) — Provincial capital on the Amu-Darya, with markets and museums.
• Farap (40 km east, 40 min) — Border town on the Uzbekistan frontier.
• Halac (50 km northwest, 45 min) — Small agricultural town.
• Danew (60 km northeast, 1 hr) — Town near the Uzbekistan border.
