Overview

Sakarya is a province in the Eastern Marmara region of Turkey, 160 km east of Istanbul. The provincial capital, Adapazarı (population 279,000), sits in the fertile Sakarya River plain, flanked by the forested Kapıorman Mountains to the south and the shores of Lake Sapanca to the west. The wider metropolitan area has a population exceeding one million and is a significant industrial centre, particularly for automobile manufacturing and agricultural processing.

The province has a long history — the city dates to 378 BC (as Agrilion) — but its modern identity was profoundly shaped by the devastating 7.6-magnitude earthquake of 17 August 1999, which destroyed much of Adapazarı and neighbouring cities along the North Anatolian Fault. The rebuilt city and the Earthquake Museum serve as memorials to that disaster, while the ongoing westward migration of seismic activity along the fault remains a source of anxiety.

For travellers, Sakarya's appeal lies not in the industrial capital but in its surroundings: the lakeside resort of Sapanca, the Byzantine Sangarius Bridge, the thermal spas of Kuzuluk, the Ottoman-era town of Taraklı, and the Acarlar Longozu floodplain forest — Turkey's largest — on the Black Sea coast to the north. The province is also a major transport hub, with YHT fast trains connecting it to Ankara, Istanbul, and Konya via the Arifiye station.

When to Visit

The best months are April–June and September–October. Spring brings green hillsides and mild temperatures (15–25 °C). Summers are warm and humid (up to 32 °C), with occasional thunderstorms. Autumn is crisp and golden. Winters are cool (2–10 °C) with some snowfall.

Lake Sapanca is pleasant year-round but busiest in spring and summer weekends, when Istanbul residents flock to its shores. The thermal spas at Kuzuluk can be enjoyed in any season.

Getting Around

Sakarya is exceptionally well-connected by rail. YHT fast trains run six times daily from Ankara (3 hours) and three times from Konya, stopping at Arifiye station (10 km southwest of Adapazarı centre). Five regional trains daily connect Gebze (with Istanbul Marmaray metro links) through Sapanca and Arifiye to Adapazarı. The Adaray commuter service links Adapazarı and Arifiye with four intermediate stops.

Intercity buses from Istanbul (90 minutes) serve the Sakarya bus terminal. Within the province, dolmuşes connect Adapazarı to Sapanca (20 km west), Hendek (35 km east), Akyazı (30 km southeast), and other towns. A car is useful for reaching Taraklı, Karasu, and the Acarlar Longozu.

Cuisine

Adapazarı is known across Turkey for its islama köfte — grilled meatballs served on a bed of bread soaked in meat juices and tomato sauce. The strip near the railway station has a concentration of köfte restaurants, including Köfteci Hacıbekir, Ardalıoğlu Islama Köfte, and Hakiki Rumeli Koftecisi. Köfteci İsmail and Meşhur Meriç are also popular.

The surrounding agricultural plain produces wheat, corn, sunflowers, and various fruits. Geyve cherries are a prized seasonal treat. The Kuzuluk thermal area has resort restaurants. In Adapazarı, Pehlivan Et Lokantası near the bus station serves good traditional meat dishes, and Çavuşoğlu Lahmacun Pide Salonu in Arifiye offers flatbreads and pide.

Culture & Festivals

Sakarya's cultural landscape reflects its position as a crossroads between Istanbul and Anatolia. The Sakarya Museum (Tu–Su) has a small collection of local history and archaeology. The Earthquake Museum documents the 1999 disaster through photographs and personal accounts. The Orhan Mosque, founded in the 13th century (though largely rebuilt in the 19th), is the city's oldest religious building.

Taraklı, with its well-preserved Ottoman wooden houses and cobblestone streets, is increasingly recognised as an architectural heritage site. The annual Sakarya Cherry Festival celebrates the region's fruit harvest. The province's multicultural population includes communities descended from Balkan and Caucasus immigrants, contributing to a diverse culinary and cultural scene.
