Taskopru

Kastamonu, Turkey

Why visit Taskopru?

Taşköprü is a district town in northern Kastamonu Province, located inland on the road to the Black Sea coast, in the Gökırmak valley. The town takes its name — literally "stone bridge" — from the six-arched stone bridge that still spans the Gökırmak river in the town centre: 101 m long and 8.4 m wide, it was long dated to the 14th century Ottoman period, but restoration work in 2018 uncovered a cross carved into the keystone of its largest arch, pointing to a Roman origin tied to Pompeiopolis, the ancient capital of Paphlagonia founded by the Roman general Pompey in the 1st century BC. The bridge has been repaired repeatedly since (recorded works in 1848, 1849, 1870, 1968 and 2018) and remains in use. Taşköprü is also known nationally for its garlic (Taşköprü sarımsağı), prized for its aroma and keeping quality.
