Torbali

İzmir, Turkey

Why visit Torbali?

Torbalı is a district town about 45 km southeast of İzmir city, on the road and rail corridor toward Selçuk. Its area was settled as early as 3000 BC, and the ancient city of Metropolis — founded around the 8th century BC and later a flourishing Hellenistic and Roman city known for its wine, theatre, and sanctuaries to Augustus and Germanicus — lies nearby. The İzmir–Torbalı railway opened in 1860, spurring the town's growth from a village into a trade center under later Ottoman rule. Today Torbalı is an agricultural and industrial town, with cotton and olives among its main crops.
