İzmir is Turkey's third-largest city and the principal metropolis of the Aegean coast, sprawling around a magnificent natural harbour backed by mountains. With a population of over 4 million, it is a progressive, cosmopolitan city that has long been Turkey's most western-looking urban centre — a legacy of its ancient Greek heritage and its role as a major trading port throughout Ottoman and Republican history. The city's waterfront promenade (the Kordon) stretches for kilometres along the Gulf of İzmir, lined with cafés, parks, and the ornate stone buildings of the Alsancak district.
Beyond the modern city, İzmir province encompasses some of Turkey's most significant archaeological sites and charming coastal towns. Selçuk is the gateway to the ancient city of Ephesus, one of the Mediterranean's best-preserved Roman cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nearby, the Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders) and the House of the Virgin Mary draw pilgrims and history enthusiasts. Bergama (ancient Pergamon) offers another remarkable archaeological complex with its Asclepion healing centre and steep theatre. The coastal towns of Çeşme, Foça, and Urla provide beaches, seafood, and relaxed Aegean lifestyle.
İzmir's culture reflects its layered history — Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern Turkish influences coexist in the city's architecture, food, and daily life. The city's liberal, educated population and large university presence give it a youthful energy that makes it one of Turkey's most liveable cities.
When to Visit
Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) offer the best conditions — warm but not hot, with pleasant sea breezes and manageable tourist numbers. Summer (July to August) is hot (30-35°C) but the coastal towns and islands are at their most vibrant, with beach life in full swing. Winter (December to February) is cool and rainy (8-12°C) but mild enough for sightseeing, and hotel prices are significantly lower. The İzmir International Fair (August-September) and the İzmir Festival bring cultural events throughout the year.

WhatsAppGetting Around
İzmir is exceptionally well connected. Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) has international and domestic flights. High-speed trains connect to Ankara (3.5 hours) and conventional trains to Istanbul and Denizli. The İZBAN commuter rail links the airport to the city centre. Metro lines, trams, and an extensive bus network cover the urban area. Ferries (İzdeniz) criss-cross the city inlet. Dolmuşes and buses serve coastal towns and archaeological sites. Çeşme is 70 km west, Selçuk 59 km south, and Bergama 107 km north. A rental car is useful for exploring the broader province, though public transport reaches the main sites efficiently.

WhatsAppCuisine
İzmir's cuisine is Aegean — olive oil-based, fresh, and vegetable-forward, with strong Greek influences. Signature dishes include İzmir köfte (meatballs with peppers and potatoes), boyoz (a flaky pastry served for breakfast), and kumru (a sesame bread roll filled with cheese, tomato, and sausage). Menemen (scrambled eggs with tomatoes and peppers) is a regional breakfast staple. The Çeşme area excels in seafood and meze. Bergama's traditional lokantas serve hearty Aegean fare. Urla's wine estates offer tastings of local grape varieties. The Kordon waterfront is lined with restaurants serving fresh fish and meze with sunset views. Vegetarian options are excellent throughout the province.
Culture & Festivals
İzmir's culture is Aegean and Mediterranean — more relaxed and cosmopolitan than interior Turkey. The İzmir International Fair (August-September) has been the city's major annual event since 1937. The İzmir Film Festival brings independent cinema to the city. The ancient theatre at Bergama hosts summer performances. Traditional Aegean folk music features the bouzouki and oud, reflecting the region's Greek heritage. The city's bazaars, particularly those in Selçuk and Tire, maintain traditional Ottoman market culture. Selçuk's annual Selçuk Efes Festival celebrates the region's archaeological heritage.
