İstanbul is Turkey's largest city and its cultural and economic heart, straddling the Bosphorus strait where Europe meets Asia. With over 15 million inhabitants, it is one of the world's great metropolises — a city of staggering historical depth, having served as capital of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires over more than two millennia. The city's skyline is dominated by the domes and minarets of its most iconic mosques, while its streets pulse with the energy of a modern city that never sleeps.
The historic peninsula south of the Golden Horn houses the Sultanahmet district, home to the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace, and the ancient Hippodrome — all within walking distance of each other. Across the Golden Horn, the Beyoğlu district offers the grand İstiklâl Avenue, the historic Pera Palace Hotel, and a vibrant nightlife. The Asian side, accessible by ferry or Marmaray tunnel, provides a more residential perspective with the atmospheric bazaars of Kadıköy and the fashionable neighbourhoods of Moda and Çukurcuma.
Istanbul's modern face is equally impressive — the city's three airports connect it globally, the Marmaray tunnel links Europe and Asia underground, and the Tünel funicular, one of the world's shortest metro lines, has been operating since 1875. Beyond the central core, the Princes' Islands offer car-free retreats, while the Black Sea coast at Şile and the historic town of Silivri provide escapes from the urban intensity.
When to Visit
Spring (April to May) and early autumn (September to October) are the best times to visit, with pleasant temperatures (15-25°C), manageable rainfall, and manageable crowds. Summer (June to August) is warm (25-30°C) with some humidity but extended daylight hours and rooftop terraces in full swing. Winter (December to February) is cool and rainy (5-10°C) with occasional snow, but the city's museums, hammams, and cafés provide ample shelter, and hotel prices drop significantly. The Istanbul Film Festival (April), the Istanbul Music Festival (June), and the Tulip Festival (April) are annual highlights.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Istanbul's three airports — Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side, Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side, and the older Atatürk Airport (now cargo) — connect the city globally. The Marmaray commuter rail tunnel links Europe and Asia under the Bosphorus. Metro lines, the nostalgic tram along İstiklâl Avenue, the Tünel funicular, ferries across the Bosphorus, and dolmuşes provide extensive coverage. The İDO and BUDO ferry services connect to towns around the Sea of Marmara. Within the historic centre, walking is often the best option, though traffic can be formidable. A Museum Pass Istanbul covers most major sights and offers queue-skipping advantages.

WhatsAppCuisine
Istanbul's food scene is as diverse as its population. Kebabs, meze, and fresh fish are staples, but the city offers everything from Ottoman palace cuisine to international fine dining. Balık ekmek (fish sandwich) from the Galata Bridge boats is an iconic cheap eat. Karaköy's cafés and Pera's restaurants serve modern Turkish cuisine. The Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) overflows with spices, Turkish delight, and dried fruits. Kadıköy's market offers the city's best fresh produce and seafood. Street food includes simit (sesame bread ring), döner, and midye dolma (stuffed mussels). Vegetarian and vegan options are increasingly abundant.
Culture & Festivals
Istanbul's cultural calendar is year-round. The Istanbul Film Festival (April), Istanbul Music Festival (June), and Istanbul Biennial (autumn) are internationally significant. The Sultanahmet area buzzes with religious and cultural activity, while Beyoğlu's galleries and performance spaces represent contemporary Turkey. The Istanbul Tulip Festival (April) fills the city's parks with millions of blooms. Traditional hammams (Turkish baths), the Grand Bazaar, and the Spice Bazaar offer enduring cultural experiences. The city's diverse religious heritage is visible in its mosques, churches, synagogues, and the Sufi Mevlevi lodges.
