Edirne is a province in northwestern Turkey, occupying a strategic position in Eastern Thrace at the confluence of the Tunca, Meriç, and Tundzha rivers, close to the borders with Greece and Bulgaria. Once the capital of the Ottoman Empire (1369–1453), Edirne was for centuries one of the grandest cities in Europe, home to magnificent mosques, imperial palaces, and a cosmopolitan population. Today it is a quieter, smaller city of around 185,000, but its architectural heritage — particularly the Selimiye Mosque, Mimar Sinan's masterpiece — makes it one of the most important cultural destinations in Turkey.
The province encompasses the rolling Thracian plains, a gently undulating landscape of wheat fields, sunflower farms, and river valleys that stretches toward the European borders. The city's compact historic centre is dominated by three great Ottoman mosques — Selimiye, Üç Şerefeli, and the Old Mosque — arranged around a web of Ottoman bridges, causeways, and tree-lined boulevards. The surrounding district includes the ancient port town of Enez on the Aegean coast, the bridge-studded town of Uzunköprü, and the tranquil Lake Gala National Park.
Edirne's position on the frontier between Europe and Asia has shaped its character. It endured 16 major battles and sieges over its 1,900-year history, passed through Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman hands, and survived Russian invasions, world wars, and the redrawing of borders that severed its hinterlands. The result is a city of quiet grandeur, where Ottoman splendour coexists with a provincial rhythm of life.
When to Visit
Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) are the ideal seasons for Edirne. Temperatures are pleasant — typically 20–28°C — with clear skies and the Thracian countryside at its greenest. Summer (July–August) brings hot, dry weather with daytime temperatures of 30–35°C, occasionally spiking higher, though thunderstorms provide brief relief. Winters (December–February) are cold and wet, with temperatures dropping near freezing and occasional snowfall.
The Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Festival, held annually in Edirne in early July, is Turkey's oldest sporting event and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Edirne Festival of Historical Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling draws thousands of spectators to witness wrestlers covered in olive oil grappling in the traditional manner. The Selimiye Mosque area hosts cultural events and exhibitions throughout the summer months.

Edirne is 224 km west of Istanbul, reachable by bus in 2–4 hours via the D100 highway or toll motorway O-3/E80. Istanbul Seyahat operates frequent services from IST airport directly to Edirne (2.5 hours, approximately 600 TL). Metro Turizm runs from Istanbul Esenler station at least hourly. The bus terminal is 5 km southeast of the city centre, connected by local buses.
By train, the overnight Bucharest–Istanbul service stops at Edirne around 02:00, though passport checks at the Bulgarian border disrupt sleep. A regional train runs twice daily from Istanbul Halkalı (5.5 hours via Çerkezköy, Çorlu, and Lüleburgaz). The Optima Express, a car-train from Villach in Austria, arrives 2–3 times weekly April–November.
The historic centre is compact and flat, ideal for walking. Local buses run every 10 minutes to outlying districts and the bus terminal, accepting Kent Kart or credit card payment (36–46 TL per ride as of 2025–2026). Taxis and dolmuş minibuses are also readily available. The nearest border crossing is Kapikule (Turkey) / Kapitan Andreevo (Bulgaria), 15 km west, open 24 hours.

WhatsAppCuisine
Edirne's cuisine reflects its Thracian heritage and Ottoman court traditions. The city is famous for its ciğer (liver) dishes — Edirne-style fried liver, thinly sliced and crispy, is a regional icon served at specialist restaurants near the Selimiye Mosque. Tava ciğeri (fried liver) is typically served with rice pilaf, onion salad, and fresh bread.
The city's other specialities include badem ezmesi (almond paste), a delicate sweet made from local almonds and sugar, sold at traditional confectioneries throughout the centre. Edirne köfte (grilled meatballs) are another staple, often accompanied by roasted peppers and tomatoes. The Thracian wine tradition is also alive, with local producers making robust reds from regional grape varieties.
For breakfast, the cafés around the Selimiye Mosque and along the Tunca River serve traditional Turkish breakfast spreads with local cheeses, olives, honey, and eggs. The Arasta Bazaar beside the Selimiye Mosque offers snacks, sweets, and local produce. Budget-friendly meals are available at restaurants clustered around the bus terminal and in the old quarter.
Culture & Festivals
Edirne's cultural identity is inseparable from its Ottoman heritage. The Selimiye Mosque, built by Mimar Sinan between 1569 and 1575, is considered the architect's crowning achievement — its vast dome, suspended seemingly weightlessly over an interior flooded with light from 999 windows, is a masterpiece of Ottoman engineering. The mosque's four minarets soar to 70.9 metres, and its calligraphy and geometric tilework are among the finest in the Islamic world.
The Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Festival, held on the first weekend of July since 1357, is the world's oldest continuously running sporting competition. Wrestlers (pehlivan) douse themselves in olive oil and compete in leather trousers (kispet) in matches that can last hours. The festival is accompanied by music, feasting, and traditional ceremonies, and was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2010.
Edirne's artistic heritage includes traditional Thracian folk music featuring the tulum (bagpipe) and zurna, and the city's historic bazaars — particularly the Bedesten (covered market) and Arasta Bazaar — continue to function as centres of local commerce and craft.
