Bilecik is a small, landlocked province in northwestern Turkey, nestled between the more prominent regions of Eskişehir to the east, Bursa to the west, and Sakarya to the north. Its landscape is defined by gentle hills, river valleys, and fertile agricultural lowlands that produce cereals, sugar beet, and fruit orchards. The provincial capital, also called Bilecik, is a quiet town of around 70,000 people built along the banks of the Karasu River.
The province's greatest historical significance lies in its role as the birthplace of the Ottoman Empire. It was at Söğüt, in Bilecik's southern reaches, that Ertuğrul Gazi and then his son Osman I — the founder of the Ottoman dynasty — established the beylik that would grow into one of history's largest empires. This heritage gives the province an outsized cultural importance relative to its modest size and population.
Bilecik remains largely untouched by mass tourism. It appeals to travellers interested in Ottoman origins, quiet Anatolian towns, and the pottery traditions of its district centres. Its location between Istanbul, Eskişehir, and Bursa makes it an easy detour for those exploring northwestern Turkey.
When to Visit
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are the best seasons, with comfortable temperatures (15–25 °C) and the countryside at its greenest. Summers can be warm (30–35 °C) but are dry and manageable in the hills. Winters are cold, with occasional snowfall that gives the landscape a stark beauty but can make rural roads difficult. The Söğüt Ertuğrul Gazi Commemoration in September is the province's largest cultural event and draws visitors from across Turkey.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Bilecik lies on the high-speed rail line between Istanbul and Ankara (YHT), making the provincial capital easily accessible by train — the journey from Istanbul's Pendik station takes about 2.5 hours, and from Eskişehir under an hour. Intercity buses connect Bilecik with Bursa (1.5 hr), Eskişehir (1 hr), and Istanbul (3 hr). Within the province, minibuses (dolmuş) and local buses link the capital with its district towns. Söğüt is 30 km southeast, Bozüyük 25 km south, and Osmaneli 30 km north. A car is helpful for reaching smaller villages and exploring the rural landscape at your own pace.

WhatsAppCuisine
Bilecik's food is rooted in central Anatolian and northwestern Turkish traditions. Local specialties include bükme (a layered pastry filled with cheese or spinach), çömlek kebab (meat stew slow-cooked in clay pots), and mantı (Turkish ravioli). The province is known for its fruit — peaches, cherries, and apples — particularly from Osmaneli and the Bozüyük plain. Dairy products are central: fresh cheese, yoghurt, and ayran appear at every meal. Bread baked in wood-fired ovens is still common in the villages. Restaurant options are modest in the provincial capital, concentrated around the town centre, but you will find honest, filling lokanta-style meals at very affordable prices.
