Overview

Antalya Province occupies one of the most spectacular stretches of the Turkish Mediterranean coast, where the Taurus Mountains plunge dramatically into turquoise waters to create a coastline of cliffs, coves, and ancient ruins. This is Turkey's premier resort destination — the "Turkish Riviera" — drawing millions of visitors annually to its all-inclusive resorts, sandy beaches, and remarkably well-preserved archaeological sites. The provincial capital, Antalya, is a city of over two million people that manages to balance modern resort infrastructure with an atmospheric old town (Kaleiçi) clustered around a Roman-era harbor.

The province's geography is defined by the sharp contrast between the narrow coastal strip and the towering Taurus range that rises immediately inland. This topographic drama creates distinct microclimates: the coast enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate with over 300 days of sunshine per year, while the mountain villages and highland districts experience cooler temperatures and lush green valleys. The coastline stretches roughly 600 kilometers when including its bays and inlets, encompassing famous resort areas from Kemer in the west through Kaş and Kalkan to Alanya in the east.

Antalya Province offers far more than beach tourism. The ancient cities of Perge, Aspendos, Side, and Termessos are scattered across the landscape like archaeological jewels, each offering well-preserved theaters, temples, and agoras. The Köprülü Canyon provides white-water rafting and pine-forested wilderness, while the Olympos Beydağları National Park protects a mountainous coastline of extraordinary beauty. For travelers, Antalya rewards exploration beyond the resort gates with a depth of history and natural beauty that few Mediterranean destinations can match.

When to Visit

The peak tourist season runs from June through September, with temperatures averaging 28°C to 35°C and sea temperatures warm enough for swimming from May through October. This is when the resort infrastructure operates at full capacity, beaches are crowded, and accommodation prices are at their highest. The Antalya Film Festival in October marks the end of peak season with cultural events that extend the tourism window into autumn.

The optimal period for cultural exploration and outdoor activities is from April through May and September through October, when temperatures range from 20°C to 28°C and the summer crowds have thinned. Spring brings wildflowers to the Taurus valleys and the ancient sites are particularly pleasant to explore without the oppressive midday heat. Autumn offers warm seas, lower prices, and the harvest season in the province's agricultural areas.

Winter (November-March) brings rain and cooler temperatures to the coast, though Antalya city remains mild compared to inland Turkey. This is the best time for budget travelers and those interested in archaeological sites without any crowds. The Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival, typically held in the ancient theater during summer, is the province's premier cultural event and requires advance planning.

Getting Around

Antalya Airport (AYT) is Turkey's second-busiest airport, receiving direct flights from European cities and domestic destinations across Turkey. The airport sits 13 kilometers east of the city center, with bus line 600 connecting to the city and dolmuş services to resort areas. Major international carriers serve the airport year-round, with increased frequencies during the summer season.

Within the province, the D400 highway forms the coastal backbone, connecting Antalya to Kemer (60 km west), Kaş (180 km west), Alanya (130 km east), and all resort towns in between. Havaş airport buses and intercity coaches provide reliable connections, while rental cars offer the most flexibility for exploring archaeological sites and mountain villages. The Antalya public bus system (Antray) serves the city center and nearby areas, including the old town.

Distances along the coast are longer than they appear on maps due to the winding mountain roads, particularly the scenic drives between Kaş and Kalkan or Antalya and Kemer. The drive from Antalya to Kaş takes approximately three hours, while Antalya to Alanya is about two hours. Mountain roads to inland districts like Akseki, İbradı, and Gündoğmuş require more time and careful driving but reward with dramatic scenery.

Cuisine

Antalya's cuisine reflects its Mediterranean location and agricultural wealth, with fresh seafood, olive oil-based dishes, and an abundance of locally grown citrus fruits and vegetables. The signature dish is Antalya piyazı, a white bean salad dressed with tahini, lemon, and olive oil — lighter and more refreshing than the tomato-based versions found elsewhere in Turkey. Fresh fish from the Mediterranean, particularly sea bass (levrek) and red mullet (palamut), is prepared grilled or fried in coastal restaurants.

The Kaleiçi old town in Antalya offers the most atmospheric dining, with restaurants clustered in Ottoman-era stone buildings overlooking the harbor. Regional specialties include hibeş (a cumin-spiced tahini dip), şiş köfte (grilled meatballs on skewers), and tandır kebabı (slow-cooked lamb). The province's orange and banana production contributes to distinctive fresh juices and desserts. Piyaz, the local bean salad, is considered Antalya's answer to the Mediterranean mezze tradition.

Markets throughout the province overflow with seasonal produce: citrus fruits in winter, tomatoes and peppers in summer, and the famous Antalya tomatoes prized across Turkey. Dietary restrictions are well accommodated, with abundant vegetarian options in the form of olive oil-based vegetable dishes (zeytinyağlılar) and the province's fresh salads and grilled vegetables.

Culture & Festivals

Antalya hosts the annual Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival, held in the perfectly preserved 2nd-century Roman theater — one of the world's most extraordinary performance venues. The festival typically runs through July and August, presenting Turkish and international opera and ballet companies against the backdrop of ancient stone seating. The Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival (Altın Portakal), held in October, is one of Turkey's most important cinema events.

The province's archaeological heritage spans millennia, from Lycian rock-cut tombs and Hellenistic theaters to Roman baths and Byzantine churches. The Antalya Museum, one of Turkey's finest, houses an extraordinary collection of statues and artifacts recovered from the province's ancient cities. Traditional crafts include carpet weaving in the mountain villages, copperwork, and the production of handwoven textiles in the Elmalı and Korkuteli highlands.

The region observes traditional Turkish and Islamic festivals with particular enthusiasm, and the Elmalı Oil Wrestling Festival (Yağlı Güreş) in summer is one of Turkey's oldest and most culturally significant sporting events. The Kaleiçi old town hosts regular cultural events, street performances, and art exhibitions throughout the tourist season, creating a vibrant atmosphere that extends beyond the resort experience.
