El Feija National Park
Jendouba, Tunisia
Why visit El Feija National Park?
El Feija National Park (Parc National d'El Feidja) is a 2,632-hectare protected forest reserve situated in northwestern Tunisia within the Kroumirie mountain range, along the border with Algeria. Established on June 9, 1990, the park safeguards one of the most humid bioclimatic regions in Tunisia, characterized by dense mountain woodlands, cold freshwater springs, and sheer sandstone summits.
The park was created as the primary conservation sanctuary for the endangered Barbary stag (Cervus elaphus barbarus), Africa's only native deer species. In addition to a 417-hectare fenced core breeding enclosure, the surrounding reserve supports diverse North African wildlife, including wild boars, golden jackals, genets, and over 70 recorded bird species such as Levaillant's woodpecker and booted eagles. Towering Zeen oaks (Quercus canariensis) and cork oaks (Quercus suber) dominate the landscape, with mossy undergrowth and ancient rock shelters.
Annual precipitation here reaches 1,000 to 1,500 millimeters, making it significantly wetter than southern or central Tunisia. The elevation ranges from 550 meters to 1,150 meters at the Kef Ennsour peak, creating moderate, breezy conditions in summer and cold, damp weather in winter.
