Tufuvai

'Eua, Tonga

Why visit Tufuvai?

Tufuvai is a small coastal village at the southern end of 'Eua, the ancient limestone island lying southeast of Tongatapu. With a population of around 200, it is one of the most southerly settlements in the Kingdom of Tonga. The village sits at the end of the sealed coastal road, where the land rises steeply toward 'Eua's forested eastern plateau. Tufuvai is best known among Tongan travellers for its beach — widely considered the finest swimming beach on the island — with soft white sand, calm turquoise water protected by the fringing reef, and almost no visitors on most days. The village itself is a handful of traditional homes, a church, and plantation plots where locals grow taro, vanilla, and root crops.

The best time to visit is the dry season (May–October), when the weather is cooler (22–26°C), the water is clearest, and humpback whales pass through the channel just offshore (July–October). The wet season (November–April) brings heat, humidity, frequent downpours, and cyclone risk, though the rainforest on the plateau above is at its greenest.

How do you get there?

By Plane

'EUA Airport (EUA), about 3 km north near Ha'atu'a, is the nearest airport. Lulutai Airlines operates the 10-minute flight from Tongatapu (TBU) several times weekly. Guesthouses can arrange airport transfers; a taxi from the airport to Tufuvai costs roughly TOP 15–20.

By Car / Road

The MV 'Onemato ferry from Nuku'alofa docks at 'Ohonua wharf, about 8 km north of Tufuvai. From 'Ohonua, the sealed coastal road runs directly south through Pangai and Ta'anga to Tufuvai. A taxi costs roughly TOP 25–35.

Tufuvai is tiny and entirely walkable. To reach the national park trailheads, cliff lookouts, or the airport, you will need a hired scooter or a pre-arranged taxi from 'Ohonua. The road through Tufuvai is sealed and in reasonable condition. Bicycles can be rented through guesthouses in 'Ohonua.

What are the things to do?

  • Tufuvai Beach — the best swimming beach on 'Eua: soft white sand, calm lagoon water protected by the reef, and almost always empty of other visitors. Best at high tide. Free.

  • Tufuvai Church — a simple, whitewashed Free Wesleyan church with a small but reverent congregation; the Sunday morning singing is a highlight.

  • Lookout to Kao and Tofua — on exceptionally clear days, the volcanic cones of Kao and Tofua in the Ha'apai group are visible on the northern horizon from Tufuvai's shore.

  • Swimming and snorkelling at Tufuvai Beach — the protected lagoon off the beach is safe for swimming at most tides, with reasonable snorkelling along the reef edge. Bring your own gear as there is no rental onsite.

  • Whale watching (July–October) — Tufuvai's deep offshore waters are a prime whale corridor; boat tours depart from 'Ohonua wharf. Land-based whale watching from the beach is also rewarding.

  • Walking to Ha'atu'a and the airport — a pleasant 30-minute coastal walk south from Tufuvai along the reef edge to Ha'atu'a, the island's southernmost settlement.

  • Hiking the southern plateau — accessible via a 4WD track behind the village, the southern end of 'Eua's plateau has some of the island's most dramatic cliff scenery.
