Overview

Kara is the northern region of Togo, the traditional homeland of the Kabiyè people and home to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Koutammakou, the Land of the Batammariba. The region is named after its main city, Kara, a lively market centre that serves as the gateway to the Tamberma Valley. Kara Region offers the most distinctive cultural landscapes in Togo, with its iconic mud tower-houses (Takienta), traditional wrestling festivals, and rolling hills dotted with baobab trees.

When to Visit

The best time to visit is December to March, during the dry season when roads are passable and the weather is cooler. The Evala wrestling festival takes place in July, which falls within the rainy season — expect muddy conditions but a vibrant cultural experience. April to November is the wet season, with heaviest rains from June to September.

Getting Around

Taxis-brousse (shared minivans) connect Kara city to Lomé (about 6 hours) and to smaller towns. Motorcycle taxis are the most practical transport within towns and for reaching villages in the Tamberma Valley. Roads to Koutammakou are unpaved and can be difficult after rain — a 4WD is essential for visiting during the wet season.

Cuisine

Northern Togolese cuisine is hearty and flavourful. Millet and sorghum porridge, grilled lamb or chicken with spicy peanut sauce, and fermented milk (lait caillé) are staples. Kara city offers a lively street food scene with grilled brochettes (skewers), fried yam chips, and fresh mangoes in season. Local beer (Togolese lager) is widely available.

Culture & Festivals

The Kabiyè people maintain rich cultural traditions, most notably the Evala wrestling festival held annually in July, where young men prove their passage to adulthood. The Batammariba of Koutammakou build extraordinary two-storey mud tower-houses (Takienta) that have become a national symbol of Togo. Traditional ceremonies involving music, dance, and storytelling are still practised throughout the region.
