How do you get there?

Balibo sits on the main road between Maliana and the Indonesian border at Batugade. Regular mikrolets pass through from Dili and Maliana.

Balibo is compact enough to explore on foot. Local mikrolets (minibuses) and motorcycles (ojeks) are available for trips within the town and to nearby villages. Roads in the area are largely unpaved and can be challenging, especially after rain.

What are the things to do?

The Balibo Five memorial, the restored Portuguese fort (now a museum and guesthouse), the Balibo church, and the border market. The fort offers views across the border into Indonesia.

Where to eat?

Dining options in Balibo are limited to small local warungs and kiosks selling basic Timorese meals — mainly rice with fish or chicken, vegetables, and coffee. It is advisable to carry snacks, especially if travelling beyond the main towns.

Where to drink?

Local coffee is widely available and excellent — Timor-Leste produces some of the finest arabica in the region. Water, soft drinks, and beer (including the local Timorese beer) can be found at small kiosks and cafes throughout Balibo.

Where to stay?

The restored Balibo Fort operates as a guesthouse with comfortable rooms and a swimming pool. It is one of the most unique places to stay in Timor-Leste, with proceeds supporting the local community.

What should you buy?

Basic goods and daily necessities are available at small local shops (kiosks) in Balibo. Fresh produce is sold at the local market. For more extensive shopping, the district capital has a wider selection of goods. ATMs are not commonly found outside the main towns, so bring sufficient cash.
