Than To

Yala, Thailand

Why visit Than To?

Than To (ธารโต) is a district in southern Yala province, located in the Sankalakhiri mountain range along the route to Betong. The name "Than To" means "stream running through" in Thai, a reference to the many waterways that flow through this mountainous terrain. The district was originally part of Bannang Sata before being established as a minor district in 1975 and upgraded to a full district in 1981.

Than To covers 648 km² and has a population of about 25,000, making it one of the least densely populated districts in Yala. The area was once the site of the Than To Prison (established in 1935 for political prisoners, closed in 1957), later converted to the Than To Estate. The economy today is based on rubber plantations, fruit orchards, and small-scale agriculture.

The district's highland location gives it a cooler climate than the coastal lowlands, with frequent fog in the morning and regular rainfall. The best time to visit is the cool season from November to February. The landscape is dominated by forested hills, waterfalls, and the expansive Bang Lang Reservoir, which lies partly within the district's boundaries.
