Why visit Kantang?

Kantang (กันตัง) is a historic port district in Trang province, located on the Trang River near its mouth on the Andaman Sea. It served as the original provincial capital of Trang and was a major seaport on the Penang-Phuket trade route. The name "Trang" itself is derived from a Malay word for dawn, as ships from other countries traditionally arrived at Kantang port at first light.

Kantang retains a charming old-town atmosphere with Sino-Portuguese shophouses, a historic railway station, and a laid-back riverside character. The area is less visited than Trang town, offering a glimpse of authentic southern Thai life. Kantang district also includes several coastal villages and stretches of undeveloped coastline.

The climate is the same as the rest of Trang province: rainy season from May to January and hot season from February to April. The best time to visit is November through April when the seas are calmer.
