Why visit Hua Hin?

Hua Hin (หัวหิน) is a seaside resort city of about 50,000 residents (2012), three or four hours south of Bangkok (195 km). It is popular with middle-aged and older foreign visitors, as a weekend getaway for Bangkok Thais, and as an expat retirement home.

Popularised as a resort in the early 1920s by King Prajadhipok, Hua Hin is closely associated with the Thai royal family. Until 1934, it was known as Samore Riang (สมอเรียง), meaning "rows of rocks". The fishing village was turned into a royal resort and became popular among Siam's nobility. In 1928, Prajadhipok built his Klai Kangwon ("far from worries") Palace, which remains a summer residence of the king. The six-kilometre-long beach is pretty and relatively clean. Besides sunbathing, snorkelling, and swimming, visitors can enjoy golf, spas, caves, peaks, waterfalls, shops, seafood, and nearby national parks.

Hua Hin has a tropical climate with high humidity. The best time to visit is the cool season (November–February). The hot season (March–May) can exceed 30°C, and the rainy season (June–October) brings short, sharp showers, with September the wettest. Phetkasem Road divides the town; perpendicular roads on the inland side are even-numbered sois, and those on the sea-side are odd-numbered.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Hua Hin Airport has no scheduled domestic air services. The nearest major airport is Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) in Bangkok, reachable by bus (3 hr, 269 baht) via Roong Reuang Coach Company. Chumphon Airport (CJM) also connects to Hua Hin by road.

By Train

Up to ten daily departures from Bangkok to Hua Hin, journey time about four hours. Tickets range from 50 baht (ordinary) to 100 baht (express). Hua Hin railway station is just west of the city centre. Nong Kae railway station, in the southern part of the city, serves a limited number of ordinary trains.

By Car / Road

From Bangkok, take Hwy 35 (Thonburi–Pak Tho) then Hwy 4 (Phetchakasem Rd) south via Phetchaburi — about 195 km and 3–3.5 hr.

Buses from Bangkok's Sai Tai Mai terminal take about 3.5 hr (under 200 baht, 1st class). Sombat Tour buses from Mo Chit depart at 06:00, 08:20, 14:20, and 18:30 (155 baht). Roong Reuang Coach Company runs VIP coaches between Hua Hin and Suvarnabhumi Airport (269 baht, 3 hr, hourly 06:00–18:00). The main BKS bus station is south of town centre near Soi 96. Minivans to/from Bangkok operate from the minivan station on Soi 51.

Hua Hin is tricky for pedestrians — sidewalks are inconsistent and Phetkasem Road is a busy thoroughfare. Tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis are the main local transport. A tuk-tuk from town centre to the BKS bus station costs ~180 baht; a motorcycle taxi from the Hilton area to the bus station costs about 60 baht. Songthaews (shared pickups) run fixed routes. Car and motorbike rentals are available. Ride-hailing apps like Grab operate in the area.
