Why visit?

Phichit (พิจิตร) is a province in Lower Northern Thailand, roughly 345 km north of Bangkok, nurtured by two parallel rivers — the Yom and the Nan — that make its floodplains exceptionally fertile. Once a major settlement during the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya eras, Phichit is known as the "land of crocodiles" (เมืองจระเข้), a reputation cemented by the Thai epic Krai Thong, composed by King Rama II, which tells of Chalawan, a crocodile king who once ruled these waters.

Today Phichit is a quiet agricultural province of rice paddies, fruit orchards, and sleepy district towns. It sees far fewer tourists than neighbouring Phitsanulok or Sukhothai, making it appealing for travellers seeking unvarnished rural Thai life. The provincial capital, also called Phichit, holds the Muang Kao Historical Park — the remnants of the ancient city — while the districts of Pho Prathap Chang and Taphan Hin are known for seedless pink-fleshed pomelos and a giant golden Buddha respectively.

When is the best time to visit?

The cool season from November to February is the most comfortable, with daytime temperatures around 28–32°C and cool evenings. March to May is the hot season, often exceeding 38°C. The rainy season (June–October) brings lush green landscapes but occasional flooding in low-lying areas. The annual boat races on the Nan River take place in September, coinciding with the homage-paying rites to Luang Pho Phet — this is the province's most vibrant period.

How do you get around?

Phichit town has a railway station on the Northern Line, with regular services from Bangkok (about 5–6 hours). Buses and minivans connect the provincial capital to every district. Within the province, songthaews (converted pick-up trucks) serve as the main local transport between towns. Distances are modest — Phichit town to Taphan Hin is about 25 km, to Pho Prathap Chang about 20 km, to Sam Ngam about 30 km. Owning or renting a car is the most practical way to explore the rural districts.

Where should you go?

What should you eat?

Phichit's most celebrated product is the seedless pink-fleshed pomelo (som o, ส้มโอ) from Pho Prathap Chang district, prized for its balanced sweet-sour flavour. Tamarind candy (makham kaeo, มะขามแก้ว) — chewy, sour-salty-sweet squares made from preserved tamarind pulp — is a popular snack throughout the province. Freshwater fish from the Nan and Yom rivers feature prominently in local cooking, often grilled or in spicy soups. The provincial capital has a handful of dedicated restaurants, while district towns rely on market stalls and small family-run eateries serving standard Thai dishes for 30–60 baht.

What is the culture like?

The annual boat racing festival (งานแข่งเรือประเพณี) is held in September on the Nan River in front of Wat Tha Luang in Phichit town, drawing crews from across the region. The pomelo harvest seasons (October and April) bring informal agricultural fairs. Phichit's hand-woven fabric (ผ้าทอมือ) tradition produces colourful cotton textiles, woven in several districts including Bang Mun Nak. The province also celebrates the usual Buddhist festivals (Visakha Bucha, Asanha Bucha, Khao Phansa) with temple ceremonies and merit-making.
