Wichian Buri

Phetchabun, Thailand

Why visit Wichian Buri?

Wichian Buri (วิเชียรบุรี) is a district in southern Phetchabun Province, about 80 km south of the provincial capital. Its name translates to "crystal city," derived from Khao Thamorat, a nearby mountain associated with the Si Thep Historical Park. Covering 1,632 km², it is one of the largest districts in the province with a population of about 132,000.

Wichian Buri holds an important place in Thai culinary culture as the home of kai yang Wichian Buri (Wichian Buri grilled chicken), a famous regional dish that has earned national recognition. The district sits at the transition between Thailand's central plains and the lower northern region, making it a strategic crossroads. King Rama III originally upgraded the area from the old town of Tha Rong, and the district was later a subordinate of the Monthon Phetchabun administrative circle.

The climate is tropical savanna with a hot season (March–May, with April temperatures often exceeding 40°C), a rainy season (June–October), and a cool season (November–February) which is the most pleasant time to visit. Wichian Buri serves as a convenient base for visiting the UNESCO-listed Si Thep Historical Park, located just to the east in neighbouring Si Thep district.
