Doi Phu Kha National Park
Nan, Thailand
Why visit Doi Phu Kha National Park?
Doi Phu Kha National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยภูคา) is the largest national park in Northern Thailand, covering 1,704 km² in the Luang Prabang Range of northeastern Nan Province. Established on 17 June 1999, the park spans eight districts and protects a vast area of montane rain forest. Its namesake peak, Doi Phu Kha (1,980 m), and the nearby Doi Phu Wae (1,837 m) are the park's most famous trekking destinations. The park is named after chomphu phu kha (Bretschneidera sinensis), a rare tree with striking pink flowers that grows only in this park within Thailand, along with other endemics such as Caryota gigas and Acer wilsonii.
The park's elevation creates a cool climate year-round. The cool season (November–February) is the best time to visit, with clear skies and temperatures ranging from 10–25°C. Early mornings often produce the famous sea of mist over the valleys. The rainy season (June–October) brings lush vegetation but trails can be muddy. The park headquarters is about 70 km north of Nan town, accessible via Rte 1080 and Rte 1256.
