Mae La Noi
Mae Hong Son, Thailand
Why visit Mae La Noi?
Mae La Noi is a small traditional town on Route 108, about 50 km south of Mae Hong Son. It is one of the seven districts of Mae Hong Son Province and remains deeply traditional, with a population composed mainly of Shan, Lawa, and Karen hill-tribe communities. Most travellers pass through on their way between Mae Sariang and Mae Hong Son, but the town's biggest draw is Kaew Komol Cave, a remarkable calcite crystal cave that attracts Thai tourists.
The town itself is very small with basic amenities — a market, an ATM, a hospital, and a post office. The surrounding mountains are home to numerous authentic hill-tribe villages that see very few foreign visitors. The cool season (November to February) offers the most pleasant temperatures for exploring, while the rainy season (June to October) turns the landscape lush and green. The hot season (March to May) can be quite warm.

What are the things to do?
Kaew Komol Cave — A short motorbike ride east of town. A beautiful ancient calcite crystal cave with well-lit walking paths. The walking route in and out takes about 20 minutes. 80 baht (includes transport to the cave). No hats, coats, backpacks, or cameras are allowed inside.
Hill-Tribe Village Visits — The mountains and lowlands around Mae La Noi are home to authentic traditional Lawa and Karen villages. Their remote location means most see very few tourists.
