Phu Ruea

Phu Ruea (ภูเรือ) is a district town in western Loei Province, named after the nearby 1,365-metre mountain that resembles an upside-down boat (เรือ means "boat" in Thai). The district sits in the Phetchabun Mountains, forming a natural boundary between northern Thailand and the Isaan region. The area is known for its cool climate, mountain scenery, and as the gateway to Phu Ruea National Park.

The Phu Ruea High Altitude Agricultural Research Station on the mountain conducts research on temperate-climate crops, and the surrounding fields grow strawberries, persimmons, and other cool-weather produce. The best time to visit is November to February when the weather is cold and clear, with temperatures sometimes dropping to freezing at the higher elevations.

By Plane

Loei Airport (LOE, IATA: LOE) is about 48 km east. From the airport, take a taxi or bus to Loei town, then a local bus to Phu Ruea.

By Train

There is no railway station in Phu Ruea. The nearest rail access is at Phitsanulok (about 180 km west) or Udon Thani (about 200 km east).

By Car / Road

Phu Ruea is on Hwy 203, about 50 km west of Loei town (1 hour drive). Buses run regularly from Loei bus terminal to Phu Ruea. From Phitsanulok, take Hwy 12 east then Hwy 203 north (about 2.5–3 hours).

Phu Ruea town is small and walkable. To reach Phu Ruea National Park, about 4 km north of town, you will need a motorbike (rental available in town for about 200–300 baht/day), a songthaew, or your own vehicle. The park entrance road branches off Hwy 203.

• Phu Ruea Mountain (ภูเรือ) — The landmark peak at 1,365 m, shaped like a boat's prow. Accessible via Phu Ruea National Park.

• Phu Ruea High Altitude Agricultural Research Station — A research facility growing temperate fruits and flowers, with beautiful gardens open to visitors.

• Mountain viewpoints along Hwy 203 — The road between Loei and Phu Ruea offers sweeping views of the Phetchabun mountain range.

• Camping and hiking at Phu Ruea National Park — Multi-day treks, camping at the park's accommodation, and sunrise viewing from Decho Viewpoint.

• Strawberry picking — The cool climate around Phu Ruea supports strawberry farms that offer pick-your-own during the December–February season.

• Motorbike touring — The winding mountain roads of Hwy 203 are popular with touring motorcyclists for their scenic curves and cool air.

• Visit local fruit orchards — Persimmon, lychee, and longan orchards in the area welcome visitors during harvest season.

Several simple restaurants in Phu Ruea town serve Isaan food and noodle dishes. The area is known for its fresh produce, so fruit stands along Hwy 203 offer strawberries and other temperate fruits at good prices.

Coffee from locally grown Arabica beans is a highlight — several cafes near the national park entrance serve excellent mountain-grown coffee. Fresh strawberry shakes and smoothies are a seasonal treat.

• Mid-range: Ruea River Hotel — comfortable rooms in town from 600 baht/night with air conditioning.
• Upscale: Phu Ruea National Park accommodation — park bungalows from 800 baht/night (reserve in advance via the DNP website).

Local agricultural products are the best souvenirs: fresh strawberries, persimmons, strawberry jam, honey, and dried fruits. The area is also known for its Arabica coffee beans grown in the high-altitude plantations.

• Phu Ruea National Park (4 km north) — The main attraction: a national park centred on the boat-shaped mountain with hiking and camping.
• Loei (50 km east) — Provincial capital with markets and cultural sites.
• Dan Sai (60 km east via mountain roads) — Home of the Phi Ta Khon Festival.
• Tha Li (40 km northwest) — Quiet border district with access to the Hueang River.
• Phitsanulok (180 km west) — Major city with the famous Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat temple.
