Bang Saen
Chon Buri, Thailand
Why visit Bang Saen?
Bang Saen is a beach town on the Eastern Gulf Coast of Thailand and the closest pleasant beach getaway from Bangkok. Famous throughout Thailand, it attracts mostly Thai visitors — families, students, and groups of friends — especially on weekends. During weekdays the town is quiet, with students from Burapha University making up much of the daytime population. Foreign tourists visit year-round but remain a small minority; there is a Scandinavian Village community of about 200-300 residents.
Bang Saen Beach holds historical significance as the site of the first government-built holiday resort in Thailand, constructed in 1943. The town is also home to the legend of Saen and Sammuk, a tragic love story involving a kite, a mountain, and a lovers' leap. The climate is tropical — the cool season from November to February is the most pleasant time, while weekends year-round see the highest visitor numbers.

By Car / Road
Buses and minibuses are the primary way to reach Bang Saen. From Bangkok's Mo Chit or Ekamai bus stations, take a bus to Pattaya or direct to Bang Saen. Minibuses from Victory Monument in Bangkok go directly into Bang Saen, stopping at Laem Thong or near Burapha Hospital. If taking a Pattaya-bound bus, get off at Nong Mon Markets. From Nong Mon, songthaews (red buses) run into Bang Saen for 10 baht. A taxi from Bangkok costs 700-800 baht.
Two types of songthaew operate in Bang Saen: red ones run between the beach, Long Haad Bang Saen Road (passing Burapha University and Laemtong shopping centre), and north to Chon Buri town; orange ones head south from Nong Mon market to Si Racha. Motorcycle taxis are also available. The beach area is walkable.
