Why visit?

Chiang Mai is the cultural and economic capital of northern Thailand and the heart of the historic Lanna kingdom, founded in 1296 CE by King Mangrai. The province spreads across mountain ranges, river valleys and forested highlands roughly 700 km north of Bangkok, with the provincial capital sitting on a plain at about 316 metres of elevation. Greener, cooler and more relaxed than Bangkok, it is often called the "Rose of the North."

The city's historic core is the famous walled old town — a near-square moat about 6.5 km in circumference enclosing more than thirty temples in Lanna, Burmese and Sri Lankan styles. Beyond the walls, Chiang Mai has expanded in every direction: the trendy Nimmanhaemin district near the university, the riverside Ping River neighbourhoods, and the Night Bazaar area along Chang Khlan Road. Overlooking it all from a mountainside 13 km away is the golden temple of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the province's most iconic landmark.

Chiang Mai Province is far more than its city. It encompasses Thailand's highest peak, Doi Inthanon; hill-tribe communities; elephant sanctuaries; and laid-back mountain towns. With a cosmopolitan air, a large expatriate and digital-nomad community, excellent food and a deep craft tradition, it is one of Southeast Asia's most rewarding and accessible destinations.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit is the cool, dry season from November to February, when daytime temperatures are a pleasant 25-30°C and nights can drop to 15°C or lower (cooler still in the mountains). This is peak season — expect higher prices and crowds, especially around the spectacular Yi Peng and Loy Krathong lantern festivals in November.

The hot season (March to June) brings temperatures above 35-40°C. Critically, February to April is the "burning season," when agricultural fires across the region cause severe smog; air quality often reaches hazardous levels and mountain views disappear — many travellers deliberately avoid these months.

The wet season (July to October) brings afternoon downpours but lush green landscapes, full waterfalls, fewer crowds and lower prices. Songkran (Thai New Year, mid-April) is celebrated with particular intensity in Chiang Mai, with city-wide water battles around the moat.

How do you get around?

Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) sits just 3 km southwest of the old city, with frequent domestic flights from Bangkok and regional international routes. Flat-rate airport taxis cost 150 baht (USD 4) to anywhere in the city; a shared shuttle minibus is about 50 baht (USD 1.50).

The railway connects Chiang Mai to Bangkok via a scenic overnight journey (around 11-13 hours); the station is east of the moat across the Ping River. Long-distance buses serve the Arcade (eastern) terminal, while the Chang Phuak terminal handles intra-provincial routes north to Mae Rim, Pai and Chiang Rai.

Within the city, the red shared songthaews (rot daeng) are the workhorse — flag one down and pay 30-50 baht (USD 1-1.50) for short hops. Tuk-tuks cost more and require negotiation; ride-hailing apps (Grab, Bolt) operate widely. Many visitors rent motorbikes (around 200-300 baht / USD 6-9 per day) or bicycles. For exploring the province, distances are significant: Doi Suthep is about 13 km from the city, Doi Inthanon's summit roughly 100 km southwest, Chiang Dao around 70 km north — a rental car or chartered driver is the most practical option.

Where should you go?

  • Chiang Mai city — the Lanna capital, with its walled old town, temples, markets and Nimmanhaemin's cafe-and-nomad scene.
  • Doi Suthep–Pui National Park — mountain park above the city, home to the revered Wat Phra That Doi Suthep and Bhubing Palace.
  • Doi Inthanon National Park — Thailand's highest peak (2,565 m), with waterfalls, twin royal pagodas and cloud forest.
  • Chiang Dao — laid-back town beneath a dramatic limestone massif, known for its cave temple and birdwatching.
  • Mae Rim — valley district north of the city, dense with elephant sanctuaries, botanical gardens and adventure parks.
  • Bo Sang — the "umbrella village," famed for handmade painted paper parasols and an annual umbrella festival.
  • San Kamphaeng — handicraft and silk-weaving district, also known for its hot springs.
  • Mae Kampong — a misty hillside village known for community-based tourism, tea and coffee.

What should you eat?

Chiang Mai's food is distinctly northern Thai (Lanna), milder and earthier than central or Isaan cooking. The signature dish is khao soi — a rich, mildly spicy coconut curry noodle soup topped with crispy fried noodles, served with preserved mustard greens, shallots and lime. Other must-tries include sai ua (herby grilled northern sausage), nam prik noom (roasted green chilli dip) and nam prik ong (tomato-pork dip), both eaten with sticky rice and vegetables, and gaeng hang lay (a Burmese-influenced pork curry).

A traditional khantoke dinner — a communal meal served on a low pedestal tray, often with Lanna dance — is a classic cultural experience. For the best eating, head to the Chang Phuak Gate night market (famous for stewed pork leg, khao kha moo), the Saturday and Sunday Walking Streets, and the cafes of Nimmanhaemin.

Chiang Mai is one of Thailand's most vegetarian-friendly cities, with abundant dedicated vegetarian and vegan restaurants, especially around the old town and Nimman. The annual Vegetarian Festival (around October) expands options further.

What is the culture like?

Chiang Mai is the custodian of Lanna culture — its own dialect, temple architecture, music, dance and crafts. The province is a craft powerhouse: silver and silk in San Kamphaeng, painted paper umbrellas in Bo Sang, woodcarving in Ban Tawai, and ceramics around the city.

The festival calendar is exceptional. Yi Peng and Loy Krathong in November are the year's highlight, when thousands of glowing lanterns are released into the night sky and decorated floats drift down the Ping River. Songkran (mid-April) turns the moat into the epicentre of Thailand's wildest water festival. The Bo Sang Umbrella Festival (January) and Chiang Mai Flower Festival (early February, with a grand floral parade) are also major draws. Inthakin (City Pillar) Festival at Wat Chedi Luang occurs around May-June.
