Zanzibar West, Tanzania

Why visit Bububu?

Bububu is a coastal suburb of Zanzibar City, about 10 km north of Stone Town. It has a long stretch of beach with several mid-range and luxury hotels. The area is quieter than the city but offers easy access to Stone Town by dala-dala.

How do you get there?

Regular dala-dalas from Stone Town (15 minutes).

Walkable along the beach road. Taxis to Stone Town are available; agree the fare before departing.

What are the things to do?

  • Bububu Beach — a stretch of sand with coral rag outcrops, quieter than the resort beaches further north.

  • Livingstone's House — a historic building on Bububu Road toward Stone Town, built around 1860 as a shelter for missionaries and settlers; explorer David Livingstone reportedly stayed here before his final expedition. Not immediately adjacent to Bububu village itself — it sits closer to the Stone Town side of the road.

  • Swimming and sunbathing — the beach is calm.

  • Dhow sunset cruise — organised by most hotels.
