Nansio

Mwanza, Tanzania

Why visit Nansio?

Nansio is the largest town on Ukerewe Island, the biggest island in Lake Victoria and the largest lake island in Africa, part of Ukerewe District in Mwanza Region about 45 km north of Mwanza city (linked by ferry). The island has been home to the Sukuma people for centuries; it was part of German East Africa and then British-administered Tanganyika, and Murutunguru village on the island was the site of East Africa's first cotton ginnery, established in 1904. Ukerewe is also known for a long history as a place of relative refuge for Tanzanians with albinism, protected historically by some local rulers. The island today is densely populated and cultivated with cassava, sweet potatoes, and cotton.
