Kigamboni

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Why visit Kigamboni?

Kigamboni is a peninsular district of Dar es Salaam, separated from the city centre by the Kivukoni Creek harbour. Once a quiet fishing area, it has grown rapidly into a popular residential and resort suburb, with beachside hotels, mangrove-fringed shores, and a more relaxed pace than the bustling city core across the water. It is reached by a short ferry crossing from Kivukoni (or a longer drive via the Nelson Mandela highway bridge at Mtoni).

How do you get there?

The Kivukoni–Kigamboni ferry runs 05:00–23:00, takes 10 minutes, and costs about TZS 500. By road from central Dar es Salaam, take the Nelson Mandela highway south to Mtoni, then the Kigamboni bridge — about 30–45 minutes depending on traffic.

Dala-dalas run the length of Kigamboni's main road from the ferry terminal to the southern resorts. Bajaj and taxis are also available. Many hotels offer free shuttles to the ferry.

What are the things to do?

  • Kigamboni Beach — a long, quiet stretch of Indian Ocean beach with resorts and a few public access points.

  • Kivukoni Creek mangrove boardwalk — a small community-run eco-trail through the mangroves at the northern tip of the peninsula.

  • Vikindu Forest Reserve — a small coastal forest reserve a few kilometres inland, good for birdwatching.

  • Relax at a beach resort — spend the day at Kigamboni Beach Resort or Serena Hotel dining, swimming, or lounging on the sand.

  • Ferry ride — the 10-minute crossing is a highlight; watch dhows, cargo ships, and the city skyline receding.

  • Seafood lunch — several resorts offer lazy weekend seafood buffets.
