Overview

Tartus (Tartus) province occupies a beautiful stretch of Syria's Mediterranean coast, extending from the slopes of the coastal mountains to the sea. This is one of Syria's most scenic and relaxed coastal provinces, where ancient ruins, Crusader castles, island fortresses, and fishing villages create a landscape of extraordinary historical and natural richness. The province is less developed for tourism than the larger coastal cities, giving it an authentic, unhurried atmosphere.

The provincial capital, Tartus, is a pleasant port city with a charming old town, a seafront corniche, and the rare distinction of containing one of the only surviving Crusader-era sea castles in the world. The offshore island of Arwad, visible from the Tartus waterfront, was the last Crusader stronghold to fall (in 1302) and remains inhabited today. The mountain villages of the interior — Safita, Dreikish, and Al-Qadmus — offer traditional stone architecture and panoramic views.

For the traveller, Tartus offers a complete coastal experience: swimming, island exploration, castle-hopping, and mountain village discovery, all within a compact and accessible province. The slower pace of life and genuine local character make it a favourite among travellers who prefer authenticity over tourist infrastructure.

When to Visit

The best months are May to October, when the Mediterranean climate delivers warm days (25–33°C), sunshine, and inviting sea conditions. Swimming is pleasant from June through September, with sea temperatures reaching 27–28°C. Spring (April–May) is ideal for mountain village exploration and hiking. Autumn (October–November) brings the olive harvest and mild, sunny weather. Winters are mild but rainy (8–16°C), with occasional storms.

Summer is the busiest season, with Syrian families vacationing from inland cities. The island of Arwad is most enjoyable in summer when boat services are frequent. Mountain villages like Safita and Dreikish are pleasant year-round due to their altitude.

Getting Around

Tartus is connected by coastal highway to Latakia (90 km north, about 1.5 hours) and to the interior via mountain passes to Homs (100 km east). Public buses and service taxis operate from the central bus station. Within the province, microbuses and shared taxis connect Tartus to Baniyas (30 km north), Safita (35 km east), Dreikish (45 km southeast), and Al-Qadmus (50 km northeast).

Fishing boats and small ferries make the crossing to Arwad island from Tartus harbour (approximately 3 km offshore, a 30-minute ride). The mountain roads to Safita and Dreikish are paved but winding. Private car hire is useful for a multi-site touring itinerary.

Cuisine

Tartus excels in Mediterranean coastal cuisine. Fresh fish and seafood — sea bass, bream, red mullet, squid, and shrimp — are the stars, grilled, fried, or cooked in tomato-based stews at seafront restaurants and fishing harbours. The waterfront of Tartus is lined with seafood restaurants where fish is selected from the day's catch.

Mountain villages contribute their own specialties: Safita is known for its excellent cheese (jibneh Safita), one of Syria's finest. Olive oil, produced abundantly, features in every dish. Mountain bread baked in tannour ovens, labneh, and fresh vegetables are staples. Arak is distilled in the coastal hills. Dietary considerations: halal is standard; the coastal Christian communities offer additional options including wine and pork.

Culture & Festivals

Tartus's culture reflects its coastal position and Crusader heritage. The Crusader sea castle of Tartus — one of the few built directly on the waterfront — is a dramatic reminder of the medieval Latin presence in the Levant. Arwad island preserves layers of Crusader, Mamluk, and Ottoman architecture within its compact walls. The mountain villages maintain traditional Levantine stone architecture with arched doorways and red-tile roofs.

The Druze and Christian communities of the interior mountains contribute distinctive traditions. The annual Sea Festival (when held) celebrates Tartus's maritime heritage with boat races, seafood competitions, and waterfront festivities. Traditional dabke dancing and folk music accompany village celebrations throughout the year.
