Al-Qaryatayn
Ḩimş, Syria
Why visit Al-Qaryatayn?
Al-Qaryatayn is a town in the Ḩimş Governorate of central Syria, located in a desert oasis about 100 km east of Homs. It has been inhabited since antiquity, serving as a caravan stop on the Palmyra–Damascus route. The town is known for its springs and palm groves, which create a green pocket in the surrounding arid landscape. Al-Qaryatayn has a significant Christian population and is home to the historic Monastery of St. Moses the Abyssinian (Deir Mar Musa al-Habashi). The town was occupied by the Islamic State in 2015–2016, which caused destruction to its historic sites.
The climate is arid: very hot summers and mild winters. Spring and autumn are the only comfortable seasons.
