Qalaat al-Madiq
Ḩamāh, Syria
Why visit Qalaat al-Madiq?
Qalaat al-Madiq is a town in the Ḩamāh Governorate of northwestern Syria, located on a strategic hill at the edge of the Ghab Plain. The town is built on and around a medieval fortress (the "Castle of al-Madiq"), which itself was built on the acropolis of the ancient Roman city of Apamea. The Roman ruins of Apamea stretch out at the foot of the hill — one of the most extensive and impressive archaeological sites in the Middle East. The town has a traditional character and a small population.
The climate is Mediterranean: hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Spring and autumn are ideal for visiting.
