Dimashq Province, centered on the ancient city of Damascus (dimashq), is the political and historical heart of Syria. The province stretches from the Mount Hermon foothills in the west across the Barada River valley and into the eastern steppe, encompassing both dense urban quarters and semi-arid plains. Damascus itself, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, anchors the province with its labyrinthine old city, Ottoman-era mosques, and the imposing Citadel that has watched over the valley for millennia.
The landscape transitions sharply within short distances: terraced orchards and spring-fed gardens line the Barada gorge, while the eastern portions of the province open into sparse desert terrain dotted with Bedouin settlements and ancient caravan routes. This contrast between fertile valley and arid steppe defines Dimashq's character — a place where lush courtyard gardens exist steps away from sunbaked souqs.
As a travel destination, Dimashq offers unparalleled access to layered history spanning Aramean, Roman, Umayyad, Ayyubid, and Ottoman periods. Beyond Damascus city, the province contains archaeological sites, mountain villages, and natural retreats that reward those willing to venture past the capital's walls.
When to Visit
Spring (March to May) is the ideal time, when the Barada Valley bursts into bloom and temperatures hover between 15°C and 25°C, making outdoor exploration of Damascus's old city and surrounding sites comfortable. Autumn (October to November) offers a pleasant second window with warm but not scorching days and the harvest season bringing fresh produce to local markets.
Summer (June to August) brings intense heat, with Damascus regularly exceeding 35°C, though evenings cool noticeably. Winter (December to February) is mild compared to northern Syria, with occasional rain and rare snowfall that dusts the slopes of Mount Hermon nearby. Damascus's Damascene Rose Festival typically occurs in late spring, celebrating the city's famed rose cultivation and attar production.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Damascus city is compact enough to navigate on foot, with the old city's alleyways best explored walking. Taxis are abundant and inexpensive for longer trips within the capital, and shared minibuses connect major neighborhoods. For travel between Damascus and suburban areas within the province, public buses and private taxis operate from the main bus stations.
The drive from Damascus to the western mountain villages takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the destination, while the eastern steppe areas are reachable within two hours. There is no active rail service within the province; the historic Hejaz Railway station in Damascus serves as a museum rather than a functioning transit hub. The Damascus International Airport lies on the southern edge of the city and serves as the main entry point for international visitors.

WhatsAppCuisine
Damascus is celebrated across the Levant for its refined cuisine, shaped by centuries of trade and cultural exchange. Signature dishes include kibbeh nayyeh (raw bulgur and lamb tartare), fatteh (layered yogurt, bread, and chickpea dish), and the city's famous baklava and ma'amoul pastries. The old city's souqs — particularly Souq al-Hamidiyyah — offer endless street food including falafel, shawarma, and freshly pressed juices.
Regional specialties include Damascene rose water-infused desserts and kibbeh variants stuffed with pine nuts and spices. For a traditional dining experience, the courtyard restaurants tucked behind the old city's walls serve multi-course mezze spreads. The neighborhoods of Jaramana and Mezzeh also host popular local restaurants where Damascenes eat.
Culture & Festivals
Damascus retains a deeply rooted cultural identity shaped by its role as the Arab Capital of Culture in 2008 and its centuries-long status as a center of Arab intellectual and artistic life. The city is famous for its silver and gold jewelry craftsmanship, particularly the ornate Damascene boxes and mother-of-pearl inlay work sold in the old city's artisan workshops.
The Damascene Rose Festival, held each spring in the Ghouta orchards, celebrates the region's world-renowned rose harvest, used in perfumes and syrups for centuries. Traditional music and dabke dance performances are a regular feature of cultural gatherings, and the city's hammams — some dating to the Ottoman period — remain active social institutions.
