Why visit Dornach?

Dornach is a municipality in the Dorneck district of Canton Solothurn, Switzerland, situated in the Lower Birs Valley at an elevation of 354 meters. Located 10 km south of Basel, the town spreads across the valley floor and climbs the lower slopes of the Jura mountains. It forms an urban unit with the neighboring canton Basel-Landschaft village of Arlesheim, separated only by municipal boundary lines.

The town gained global renown in 1913 when Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner selected Dornach as the international headquarters for the Anthroposophical Society. Steiner designed the Goetheanum, a monumental cast-concrete building completed in 1928, along with dozens of surrounding organic expressionist residential and administrative structures. Beyond anthroposophy, Dornach played a key role in Swiss history as the site of the 1499 Battle of Dornach, which secured the independence of the Swiss Confederacy from the Holy Roman Empire.

Dornach experiences a central European climate influenced by the Rhine plain. Summers (June through August) bring average daily highs of 20 °C to 26 °C (68 °F to 79 °F), while winters (December through February) see temperatures between −1 °C and 6 °C (30 °F to 43 °F). Annual precipitation averages 950 mm, with May and June being the wettest months.
