Why visit Boncourt?

Boncourt is a border municipality in the Ajoie district of Canton Jura in northwestern Switzerland, situated along the Allaine River directly adjacent to the French border. First documented in 1140 under the name Bononis Curia, the settlement developed from a rural farming community into a notable manufacturing center in the 19th and 20th centuries through the Burrus tobacco factory, which established housing, parks, and civic infrastructure for generations of local workers.

Today, Boncourt serves as a quiet rural base for exploring the rolling Jura hills and the limestone plateau of the Ajoie. Highlights include a 35-hectare American bison reserve, medieval stone ruins, sculpted forest trails, and direct links to the cross-border trails of the French Franche-Comté region.

The local climate is temperate continental. Positioned at an elevation of 375 meters in the Ajoie valley, Boncourt experiences warmer and drier weather than the higher Jura mountain ridges, featuring moderate summers and cool, damp winters.

Cross-border services run north across the French frontier to Delle (3 minutes) and the Belfort-Montbéliard TGV station in Méroux (20 minutes), providing high-speed TGV connections to Paris, Lyon, Strasbourg, and Marseille. A standard single second-class ticket from Porrentruy to Boncourt costs CHF 6.80 ($7.80 USD), while a ticket from Delémont costs CHF 16.40 ($18.80 USD). Both first-class and second-class carriages are available.

By Car

Boncourt connects directly to the Swiss A16 motorway (the Transjurane), providing access to Porrentruy (12 km, 12 minutes), Delémont (42 km, 35 minutes), and Biel/Bienne (80 km, 1 hour). At the Boncourt border crossing, the A16 transitions directly into France's Route Nationale N19 toward Belfort (22 km, 25 minutes) and the A36 motorway. Driving on Swiss motorways requires an annual motorway vignette (CHF 40 / ~$46 USD).

By Bus

Regional bus routes across the Ajoie district are run by MOBIJU (operated by CarPostal/PostBus) under the Jura Vagabond tariff system. Bus lines link Boncourt to surrounding villages including Courchavon, Grandgourt, and Buix. Buses run every 30 minutes during morning and evening rush periods and hourly through the day. Single local fares start at CHF 3.20 to CHF 5.00 (~$3.70–$5.75 USD).

The village center is small, making it straightforward to navigate on foot between the train station, town hall, and local businesses.

For trips across the district, MOBIJU buses connect to nearby hamlets. Fares can be purchased via ticket machines at stops, on board from the driver, or using the SBB Mobile and Fairtiq smartphone apps.

Bicycles and e-bikes are an efficient way to explore the flat terrain of the Ajoie valley. Taxis can be ordered from Porrentruy or Delle (such as Taxi Ajoie) with base rates starting around CHF 6.50 plus CHF 3.80 per kilometer.

What are the things to do?

  • Tour de Milandre (Milandre Tower): A 13th-century round stone keep standing roughly 20 meters tall on a limestone outcrop overlooking the Allaine River. It is the sole surviving structure of a fortress built by the Counts of Montbéliard and later held by the Prince-Bishops of Basel until French troops destroyed it in 1674. Restored by community volunteers in 1988, visitors can climb the interior stairway to an open viewing platform. Entry is free.

  • Jura-Bison Park: A 35-hectare open-range reserve in Montgeneaux housing a herd of approximately 60 North American bison grazing across pastures and beech forest. The entrance features a 23-meter wooden totem pole carved from a single trunk by artist Michel Schmid. Visitors can view the animals along perimeter paths for free; guided 30-minute wagon rides among the herd operate on reservation for CHF 10–12 (~$11.50–$13.80 USD) per adult.

  • Sentier des Faînes (Enchanted Forest Trail): A thematic forest trail on Mont Renaud featuring over 50 chainsaw-carved wooden sculptures of woodland wildlife and comic book characters, alongside agrisculptures made from vintage farm tools, insect shelters, and a wooden lookout tower overlooking the Vosges mountain range. • Grottes de Milandre: A 10-kilometer limestone karst cavern system extending below the Milandre plateau. The underground chambers are closed to the general public for conservation and safety, but the surface karst spring (the "Bâme") and limestone cliffs remain accessible as outdoor waypoints tied to regional folklore of the Fée Arie. Viewing the exterior is free.

  • Hike Mont Renaud: Choose between the short 2.3-kilometer loop or the 4.6-kilometer long loop on the Sentier des Faînes, passing picnic clearings, a Canadian-style wooden shelter, and panoramic viewpoints across the Belfort Gap.

  • Taste Bison Specialties: Visit the Mag'Bison farm shop at the Jura-Bison reserve to sample locally cured bison sausages, terrines, and fresh steaks.

  • Ride the Ajoie Cycling Circuits: Follow signposted regional cycle ways across the flat plains of the Ajoie, connecting Boncourt with historic farmhouses in Coeuve, Courchavon, and the botanical gardens of Porrentruy.
