Why visit Taby?

Täby (pronounced approximately "TEH-buh") is an affluent suburban municipality roughly 20 km north of central Stockholm in Stockholm County (Stockholms län). With around 75,000 residents it is one of the largest municipalities in the Stockholm metropolitan area and has long been regarded as one of Sweden's wealthiest, characterised by leafy residential neighbourhoods, well-regarded schools, and high property values. Although often treated as a commuter town, Täby has a character of its own: a history stretching back to the Viking Age, a famous horse-racing track (now redeveloped), and one of the greater Stockholm area's largest shopping centres.

The municipality is centred on the old village of Täby kyrkby, whose medieval stone church still stands and contains remarkable 14th-century wall paintings by Albertus Pictor. The former Täby Galopp racecourse, which operated from 1960 to 2016, has been transformed into a new urban district called Galoppen, with housing, shops, schools, and parks — a major piece of urban redevelopment that is giving the area a more urban feel. Täby also borders the shoreline of the Stockholm archipelago's inner reaches at its eastern edge, where the neighbourhoods of Näsbypark and Täby strand offer waterfront paths and small harbours.

Climate follows the classic Stockholm pattern: maritime-influenced continental with four distinct seasons. Summers are long and pleasant with 18+ hours of daylight at midsummer; winters are cold and dark with only about six hours of daylight in December. The area is well-connected to Stockholm's public transport network, making it an easy day trip or a quieter base for exploring the capital region.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN), located about 25 km north of Täby. From Arlanda, you can reach Täby by taking the Arlanda Express train to Stockholm Central Station (20 min, around 320 SEK one-way), then transferring to the Roslagsbanan or bus. Alternatively, Flygbussarna airport coaches run to various Stockholm stops; catch the line toward Tekniska Högskolan and transfer to local transit. A taxi from Arlanda to Täby takes about 20–30 minutes and costs roughly 450–600 SEK depending on the company (use reputable firms like Taxi Stockholm or Taxi Kurir — avoid unofficial cabs). Bromma Airport (BMA) is also relatively close at about 20 km southwest but handles mainly domestic routes.

By Train

Täby does not have a mainline SJ railway station. The principal rail connection is the Roslagsbanan, a narrow-gauge commuter rail line operated by SL, which runs from Stockholm Östra (Stockholm East station, adjacent to Tekniska Högskolan T-bana station) northward through the municipality with stops at Täby centrum, Roslags-Näsby, Galoppfältet, Täby kyrkby, and several others. Trains run frequently (every 10–15 min during peak hours) and the journey from Stockholm Östra to Täby centrum takes about 20 minutes. A single SL ticket (valid on buses, metro, Roslagsbanan, and ferries) costs around 39 SEK for a 75-minute journey within the county; a 24-hour pass is about 165 SEK. Tickets are loaded on an SL Access card or purchased via the SL app.

By Car / Road

Täby is well connected by road. From central Stockholm, drive north on the E4 motorway (take the Täby/Arninge exit) — the trip is about 20–25 minutes in light traffic, though rush hour can double this. From Uppsala (about 70 km north), the drive south on the E4 takes roughly 50 minutes. From Arlanda Airport, it is about 20 km or 20 minutes via the E4. Parking is generally straightforward outside the Täby centrum shopping area, where a large multi-storey car park offers free parking (one of the draws of the shopping centre). SL buses also connect Täby with neighbouring municipalities and Stockholm's metro stations at Mörby Centrum and Danderyds sjukhus.

The Roslagsbanan commuter train is the backbone of local transit, with several stops within Täby municipality. SL buses fill in the gaps, connecting residential areas to Roslagsbanan stations, the Täby centrum shopping complex, and the Mörby Centrum T-bana (metro) station just south of the municipal border. A single SL ticket (39 SEK for adults, discounted with SL Access card) covers 75 minutes on any combination of bus, metro, Roslagsbanan, and SL ferries.

Täby is generally walkable within its neighbourhoods, though distances between areas can be long. Cycling is popular and there are dedicated bike paths along many roads. Ride-hailing via Bolt and Uber operates in the area. There are no autorickshaws or tuk-tuks.

The T-bana (metro) red line has its nearest station at Mörby Centrum (in neighbouring Danderyd), a short bus ride from southern Täby. From Mörby Centrum it is about 15 minutes to T-Centralen (Stockholm's central metro hub).

What are the things to do?

  • Täby kyrka (Täby Church) — A medieval stone church dating from the 13th century, famous for its interior wall paintings by Albertus Pictor (c. 1470s), one of Sweden's most important medieval artists. The paintings depict biblical scenes and everyday medieval life. Free to visit; check for open hours as the church may close for services. Located in Täby kyrkby.

  • Täby Centrum — One of the largest shopping centres in the Stockholm region, with over 120 stores, restaurants, and a cinema. Architecturally notable for its recent renovations. Free entry, open daily (shops typically 10:00–20:00, Sundays 11:00–18:00). Adjacent to the Täby centrum Roslagsbanan stop.

  • Runestones — Täby municipality has several preserved Viking Age runestones scattered throughout the area. The most notable is the Jarlabanke Runestones near Täby kyrkby, associated with the powerful Jarlabanke clan of the 11th century. Free to view; outdoors, always accessible.

  • Näsbypark and the waterfront — The eastern edge of Täby meets the inner archipelago. Näsbypark has a small marina, waterfront walking paths, and views across the water toward Lidingö. A pleasant area for a stroll, especially in summer.

  • Täby Galopp / Galoppen district — The former horse-racing grounds (Täby Galopp operated 1960–2016) are being redeveloped into a new urban neighbourhood. The site itself is of interest as a large-scale Swedish urban infill project, with new parks, architecture, and community spaces emerging. Walk through to see Stockholm's suburban-to-urban transformation in progress.

  • Rinkebyskogen — A forested green area in western Täby popular for walks, running, and nature. In winter, cross-country skiing trails are groomed here.

  • Walk or cycle the Roslagsleden — Sections of this long-distance trail pass through or near Täby, offering scenic walks through mixed forests and past small lakes. Maps available from the Swedish Tourist Association (STF).

  • Golf — Täby has several golf courses, including Täby GK (Täby Golf Club), one of Sweden's most prestigious clubs, and Arninge Golf Club. Green fees range from about 400–800 SEK for a round depending on the course and season.

  • Swimming — In summer, local beaches and lake swimming spots open. Näsviken on the waterfront and various inland lakes offer bathing. Public pools are also available at Täby Badhus.

  • Day trip to Stockholm — Täby's proximity to the capital (20 minutes by Roslagsbanan) makes it ideal for daily excursions to Gamla Stan, Djurgården, the Vasa Museum, and everything else Stockholm offers.

  • Winter sports — Cross-country skiing in local forests (groomed trails when snow permits) and ice skating on frozen lakes or at outdoor rinks.

  • Explore suburban Stockholm culture — Visit the Galoppen redevelopment, walk the quiet residential streets with their well-kept gardens and mid-20th-century architecture, and experience a side of the Stockholm region that most tourists miss.

Where to eat?

Swedish food culture dominates, with pizza, sushi, and Middle Eastern cuisine also well-represented. At Täby Centrum you will find a large food court and several sit-down restaurants. For a more traditional Swedish meal, seek out smaller restaurants in the older parts of Täby.

  • Sushi Yama (Täby Centrum) — Popular Japanese restaurant with fresh sushi and lunch specials, mains 120–200 SEK.
  • Vapiano (Täby Centrum) — Casual Italian chain with pasta and pizza, mains 100–170 SEK.
  • Max Burgers (Täby Centrum) — Sweden's own fast-food burger chain, a better-than-average alternative to the global chains. Mains 80–130 SEK.
  • Täby Krog — Traditional Swedish-style restaurant in the older part of Täby, serving husmanskost (home-style cooking) such as meatballs with lingonberries, Janssons frestelse (potato gratin with anchovies), and Toast Skagen. Mains 150–280 SEK.

Vegetarian and vegan options are increasingly common in Swedish restaurants, and most establishments clearly label allergens. Halal and gluten-free options are available at many restaurants but call ahead to confirm. Swedish fika (coffee and pastry break) is a must — try a kanelbulle (cinnamon bun) with your coffee at any café.

Where to drink?

Sweden has a strong coffee culture, and Täby is no exception. Several cafés around Täby Centrum and in Täby kyrkby serve excellent Swedish-style coffee (strong filter coffee, often with free refills). Chains like Espresso House and Wayne's Coffee are ubiquitous, but independent cafés are more rewarding.

For alcoholic drinks, note that Sweden has a state alcohol monopoly: Systembolaget (at Täby Centrum and Arninge) is the only shop selling beer above 3.5% ABV, wine, and spirits. Opening hours are limited (typically Mon–Fri 10:00–19:00, Sat 10:00–15:00, closed Sunday). Beer up to 3.5% ABV is available in regular grocery stores.

Restaurants and bars serve alcohol, but drinking out in Sweden is expensive — expect 80–120 SEK for a pint of beer and 90–130 SEK for a glass of wine. O'Learys at Täby Centrum is a sports bar and restaurant chain with a lively atmosphere. For a more authentic Swedish pub experience, head into Stockholm where the selection is broader.

Tap water in Täby (and all of Sweden) is excellent and safe to drink — there is no need to buy bottled water.

Where to stay?

Täby has limited hotel options compared to central Stockholm, but it is a viable base for those wanting a quieter stay with easy metro/train access to the city.

  • Budget: Accommodation is scarce within Täby proper for backpacker-level budgets. The closest hostel options are in central Stockholm (STF af Chapman, Generator Stockholm — 250–450 SEK/night for a dorm bed). Alternatively, Airbnb rooms in Täby start from around 400–600 SEK/night.
  • Mid-range: Scandic Täby — a reliable Swedish hotel chain property near the Arninge area, with clean modern rooms, breakfast included, and free parking. Rates typically 900–1,400 SEK/night. Good Morning Täby — another budget-friendly hotel option near the E4, rates from about 700–1,100 SEK/night.
  • Upscale: Täby itself lacks luxury hotels. For upscale stays, Djurönäset on Djurö island (about 30 minutes east, in Värmdö municipality) is a conference hotel with spa and waterfront setting, rates from 1,500–2,500 SEK/night. Otherwise, central Stockholm offers the full range of luxury hotels (Grand Hotel, Hotel Diplomat, etc.) within a 20–30 minute commute.

What should you buy?

Täby's main shopping destination is Täby Centrum, with over 120 stores ranging from Swedish high-street brands (H&M, Lindex, Åhléns) to electronics (Elgiganten), home goods (IKEA's smaller city-format store nearby), and specialty shops. There is also a large ICA Maxi hypermarket for groceries and essentials.

For a more local shopping experience, the small shops and cafés around Täby kyrkby offer a village atmosphere. Arninge has a retail park with larger stores. Swedish design items, outdoor clothing (Fjällräven, Didriksons), and food specialties (Swedish fudge, cloudberry jam, smoked salmon) make good souvenirs and are available at the shopping centre and nearby Stockholm.

Bargaining is not customary in Sweden — prices are fixed in all shops and markets.

Where to go next?

  • Stockholm (20 km south, 20 min by Roslagsbanan/metro) — Sweden's capital and the obvious next stop: Gamla Stan, Djurgården, the Vasa Museum, Skansen, ABBA Museum, and world-class dining and nightlife.
  • Uppsala (70 km north, 50 min by car or 40 min by train from Stockholm Central) — Sweden's university city with a magnificent cathedral, the Carolina Rediviva library, and Viking-era burial mounds at Old Uppsala.
  • Sigtuna (30 km northwest, 30 min by car) — Sweden's oldest surviving town, founded in 980 AD, with medieval ruins, charming wooden houses, and lakeside walks along Mälaren.
  • Vaxholm (25 km east, 40 min by car or bus+ferry) — The gateway to the Stockholm archipelago, with a picturesque harbour, the Vaxholm Fortress, and ferries to further islands.
  • Djurö / Värmdö (30 km east, 30 min by car) — Inland and archipelago nature with hiking, swimming, and the Djurönäset conference hotel. A taste of the archipelago without the long ferry ride.
  • Mörby Centrum / Danderyd (3 km south, 5 min by bus) — Just across the municipal border, with the nearest T-bana station and its own shopping and dining. Technically a different municipality but practically adjacent.
