Hallefors

Örebro län [SE-18], Sweden

Why visit Hallefors?

Hällefors is a small inland town in the Bergslagen mining region of central Sweden, about 90 km northwest of Örebro in Örebro län. The municipality has around 6,500 inhabitants while the town itself has roughly 1,500, making it one of Sweden's quieter and more remote localities. For centuries the area was shaped by iron mining and charcoal production — the Bergslagen tradition — and while the last mines closed in the 20th century, the landscape of dense spruce and pine forests, rivers, and lakes still bears that industrial heritage.

The town sits along the Svartälven (Black River) and is surrounded by hundreds of small lakes within the municipality's roughly 1,150 km². Today Hällefors is reinventing itself through outdoor tourism, small-scale food production, and cultural initiatives. The municipality made headlines in the 2020s by offering incentives to attract new residents, reflecting a broader Swedish trend of rural depopulation.

Visitors come to Hällefors for quiet forest holidays, fishing, canoeing, and hiking the long-distance Bergslagen trails (Bergsleden). It is the kind of place where nature is the main attraction and urban amenities are limited — bring a car and self-sufficiency. Nearby Grythyttan, within the same municipality, is better known for its food culture.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport with scheduled domestic and international flights is Stockholm Arlanda (ARN), roughly 250 km east and a 2.5–3 hour drive. Örebro Airport (ORB), about 90 km away, has limited scheduled services. From either airport, driving or a combination of airport train/bus to Örebro and onward bus is the most practical approach. There is no airport shuttle directly to Hällefors.

By Train

Hällefors has a railway station on the Bergslagen line (Bergslagsbanan), which connects Örebro to Ludvika and onwards. SJ and regional train operators serve this line, though services are infrequent (a few trains per day). The journey from Örebro takes about 1.5–2 hours. Book tickets at sj.se or through the regional transport authority Länstrafikens regional planner. Check schedules carefully as some services require a change at Frövi or Kopparberg.

By Car / Road

Hällefors is reached via Riksväg 63 (the road between Örebro and Ludvika/Karlstad). Driving distances:

  • From Örebro: about 90 km, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes via Rv 63.
  • From Karlstad: about 110 km, roughly 1.5 hours via Rv 63.
  • From Stockholm: about 250 km, roughly 2.5–3 hours via E18 and Rv 63.
  • From Gothenburg: about 270 km, roughly 3 hours via E20 and Rv 63.

Roads are well-maintained tarmac but can be icy in winter — winter tyres are mandatory December–March. Fuel stations are present in Hällefors town but spacing can be long on rural routes, so fill up before exploring the municipality.

Länstrafiken Örebro operates regional buses connecting Hällefors to Örebro and other towns in the county. Services are limited (a few per day, fewer on weekends) so check the timetable at lanstrafiken.se in advance.

Hällefors town is small enough to walk anywhere within 15–20 minutes. There is no local bus network within the town itself. To explore the wider municipality (lakes, forests, Grythyttan, and other villages), a car is essentially required.

Taxis can be booked through the local dispatch in Hällefors but are not readily available on the street. There is no ride-hailing app coverage. Cycling is pleasant on rural roads in summer, though distances between sights can be long and bike rental is not widely available — bring your own.

For hiking, the Bergslagen trail (Bergsleden) and other marked trails are accessible on foot from the town or by driving to trailheads.

What are the things to do?

  • Hällefors Kyrka (Hällefors Church): A medieval stone church dating to the 13th century, located in the town centre. The church has a distinctive red-brick exterior and interior furnishings from several centuries. Open during services and in summer.

  • Grythyttan: A small village within Hällefors Municipality, about 20 km west, known for its food culture and the historic Grythyttans Stattsherdgård inn. The village centre has well-preserved Bergslagen wooden architecture.

  • Svartälven (Black River): The river running through Hällefors, offering scenic stretches for canoeing and fishing. Several access points along the riverbank in and around town.

  • Bergslagen Mining Heritage: Scattered throughout the municipality are remnants of the region's centuries-old iron-mining and charcoal-burning history — old mine shafts, slag heaps, and charcoal kiln sites in the forest. Ask at local information for self-guided heritage trails.

  • Lakes and Forests: The municipality has over 300 lakes. Notable ones for fishing and swimming include Långsvan, Torrvarpen, and Nedre Vättern (a section within the municipality). Forest roads lead to quiet lakeside spots.

  • Hiking on Bergsleden (the Bergslagen Trail): A long-distance trail passing through the municipality with day-hike sections through forest and along lake shores. Maps available from the Swedish Tourist Association (STF) or locally.

  • Canoeing and Kayaking: Svartälven and the many lakes offer flatwater paddling. Canoe rental can sometimes be arranged through local outfitters or accommodation providers. Multi-day canoe routes on Svartälven are a classic Bergslagen experience.

  • Fishing: Hällefors is known for pike, perch, and trout fishing. A fishing permit (fiskekort) is required for most waters and can be bought at local shops or online via ifiske.se. Prices typically range from 50–150 SEK per day depending on the water.

  • Cross-country Skiing: In winter, groomed trails are available in and around the town. Equipment rental is limited — bring your own or check with local accommodation.

  • Berry and Mushroom Picking: Swedish allemansrätten (the right of public access) means you can freely pick berries and mushrooms in the forests. Late August through September is peak season for lingonberries, blueberries, and chanterelles.

  • Day Trip to Grythyttan: Visit for its food culture, the historic inn, and the Bergslagen village atmosphere. The Grythyttan culinary traditions have been a draw since the 1990s.

Hällefors is a small town with limited dining options. Don't expect a wide range of restaurants — plan to self-cater or combine visits with Grythyttan. Swedish home cooking (husmanskost) dominates what is available.

  • Hällefors Wärdshus: The town's main restaurant, located in a traditional wärdshus (inn). Serves Swedish classics like meatballs with lingonberries, toast Skagen, and seasonal game dishes. Mains typically 130–220 SEK.
  • Grythyttans Stattsherdgård (Grythyttan): The well-known inn in Grythyttan, historically linked to Carl-Jan Granqvist's culinary school. A more upscale dining experience focused on local ingredients. Reservations recommended; mains 200–350 SEK.
  • Cafés and Pizzerias: Small cafés and a pizzeria operate in town, serving simple Swedish lunch dishes, fika (coffee and pastries), and pizza. Prices 80–150 SEK for a meal.

Where to drink?

The drink culture in Hällefors is typical of small Swedish inland towns. Coffee (kaffe) is central to social life — expect strong, drip-brewed filter coffee. Several cafés in town serve coffee with kanelbullar (cinnamon buns) and other fika pastries.

Alcohol is sold only at Systembolaget, the state alcohol retailer. Hällefors does not have its own Systembolaget; the nearest is in Örebro or in the nearest larger town, so plan purchases accordingly. Beer (3.5% and below) and cider are available at ICA. Local craft beer from Bergslagen-area breweries may occasionally be found in shops.
