Why visit Asarum?
Asarum is a small locality (tätort) in Karlshamn Municipality, Blekinge County, in southern Sweden. With a population of roughly 2,000–3,000, it is a quiet residential community rather than a major tourist hub. The town sits amid the gently rolling, forested landscape typical of Blekinge — a county long nicknamed "Sveriges trädgård" (Sweden's Garden) for its comparatively mild climate and fertile soils. Asarum's character is quintessentially rural Småland-Blekinge: red wooden farmhouses, birch-lined lanes, and a pace of life that feels a world away from Sweden's larger cities.
Historically, the area around Asarum has been shaped by small-scale agriculture, forestry, and the granite quarrying industry that once powered much of Blekinge's economy. The town developed as a local service centre for surrounding farms and villages. Today it functions largely as a commuter settlement for Karlshamn, the municipal seat about 15 km to the southeast, which provides the nearest harbour, rail station, and broader commercial amenities.
The climate is oceanic-influenced, making Blekinge one of the mildest and sunniest parts of Sweden. Summers are warm and pleasant, winters relatively mild by Swedish standards, though still cold and dark from November through February. Visitors typically come to Asarum not for the town itself — which has limited tourist infrastructure — but as a base for exploring Blekinge's archipelago, coastal towns, and inland forests, or simply to experience authentic small-town Swedish life.

By Plane
The nearest airport is Ronneby Airport (RNB), about 35 km northwest of Asarum. It handles domestic flights, primarily to Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) via BRA Braathens Regional Airlines, with a flight time of roughly one hour. From Ronneby Airport, a taxi to Asarum costs around 500–700 SEK; there is no direct public bus. Renting a car at the airport is the most practical option.
For international arrivals, Malmö Airport (MMX/Sturup) is about 150 km to the southwest, and Copenhagen Airport (CPH/Kastrup) in Denmark is roughly 190 km away via the Öresund Bridge. Both are well-connected to Asarum by car or by train to Karlshamn followed by a short local transfer.
By Train
Asarum does not have its own railway station. The nearest station is in Karlshamn, served by regional Öresundståg trains running between Malmö, Kristianstad, and Karlskrona along the Blekinge coast. Journey time from Malmö is approximately 1 hour 40 minutes, and from Karlskrona about 30 minutes. SJ and Krösatågen also operate services in the region. Book via sj.se or the regional transit authority Blekingetrafiken. From Karlshamn station, a taxi or local bus (line 1 or regional routes operated by Blekingetrafiken) covers the remaining 15 km to Asarum.
By Car / Road
Asarum lies just off the E22 highway, which runs along Sweden's south coast connecting Malmö, Kristianstad, Karlshamn, and Karlskrona. Driving distances from nearby cities:
- Karlshamn: 15 km, about 15 minutes
- Karlskrona: 50 km, about 45 minutes
- Kristianstad: 70 km, about 1 hour
- Malmö: 150 km, about 1 hour 45 minutes
Roads are well-maintained and driving is straightforward. Blekingetrafiken operates regional bus routes connecting Asarum with Karlshamn and surrounding towns; check blekingetrafiken.se for schedules and fares.
Asarum is small enough to explore on foot. The compact centre and surrounding residential areas can be walked end to end in under 30 minutes. There is no local bus network within the town itself; Blekingetrafiken regional buses connect Asarum with neighbouring communities like Karlshamn, but services are infrequent, especially on evenings and weekends.
A car is strongly recommended if you plan to explore Blekinge beyond Asarum. Ride-hailing apps such as Uber have limited or no presence in rural Blekinge; local taxi companies (e.g., Karlshamns Taxi, call +46 454 150 50) can be booked by phone. Cycling is a good option in summer — the terrain is gently undulating and Blekinge has a well-marked network of cycling routes (Blekingeleden). Bike rental is available in Karlshamn.
What are the things to do?
Asarum itself has few dedicated tourist sights, but the surrounding area offers several points of interest:
Asarum Church (Asarums kyrka): A medieval stone church dating from the 12th–13th century, typical of Blekinge's rural parish churches. Worth a look for its simple, atmospheric interior and ancient churchyard. Free to visit, open during daylight hours.
Blekinge Archipelago: The Blekinge coastal archipelago, stretching from Karlshamn eastward to Karlskrona (a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a naval base), is one of southern Sweden's finest coastal landscapes. Ferries and sightseeing boats depart from Karlshamn harbour.
Karlshamn: The nearest city (15 km) has a charming old town, the Karlshamns Museum, the Eriksbergs Vilt- och Naturpark (wildlife and nature park), and a lively harbourfront. Well worth a half-day or full-day visit.
Jämjö and the Granite Trail: The surrounding countryside has remnants of Blekinge's historic granite quarrying industry. Scattered old quarry sites and rural heritage markers dot the landscape.
Mörrum River: The Mörrum River, famous as one of Sweden's premier salmon rivers, flows through nearby Mörrum (about 10 km from Asarum). The Laxens Hus (Salmon House) visitor centre in Mörrum showcases the river's natural history and sport fishing heritage.
Blekingeleden Trail: A long-distance hiking trail (approx. 260 km total) that passes through Blekinge's varied landscapes. Sections near Asarum offer day-hike possibilities through mixed forests and along streams.
Fishing on the Mörrum River: Fly-fishing and spin-fishing for Atlantic salmon and sea trout on the Mörrum river is a major draw. Permits are sold at Laxens Hus in Mörrum; a day permit typically costs 300–800 SEK depending on the season and beat.
Cycling Blekingeleden: The cycling variant of the Blekinge trail network offers routes of varying difficulty through forests, farmland, and along the coast. Maps available from Blekingetrafiken and local tourist offices.
Swimming and kayaking: In summer, the Blekinge coast offers sheltered swimming spots and kayaking among the skerries and islands. Equipment rental is available in Karlshamn.
Foraging: Sweden's right of public access (allemansrätten) allows berry and mushroom picking in forests around Asarum. Blueberries (blåbär), lingonberries, and chanterelles are abundant in late summer and autumn.
Day trips: Use Asarum as a base for exploring Blekinge — the naval city of Karlskrona (UNESCO World Heritage), the coastal towns of Ronneby and Sölvesborg, and the island of Hanö are all within an hour's drive.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to eat?
Asarum has a limited dining scene typical of small Swedish towns. For a wider selection, head to Karlshamn. Swedish staples available in the area include husmanskost (home-style cooking) — dishes like köttbullar (meatballs), pyttipanna (hash), and fiskgratäng (fish gratin). Blekinge's coastal location means fresh seafood — particularly Baltic herring, smoked salmon, and shrimp — features prominently.
- Local pizzeria / grill: Like most small Swedish towns, Asarum has at least one pizzeria or hamburger grill — the ubiquitous Swedish "gate kitchen" serving pizza, kebabs, and burgers at moderate prices (80–130 SEK for a main).
- Karlshamn harbourfront restaurants: For a proper sit-down meal, Karlshamn's harbour and old town have several restaurants. Try seafood-focused menus featuring locally caught fish and shellfish. Mains 150–300 SEK.
- Grocery self-catering: ICA or Coop in Asarum stock all basics. Picking up supplies for a picnic or cooking at your accommodation is the most common approach for budget visitors. Swedish groceries are reasonably priced by Nordic standards.
- Mörrum area cafés: Small cafés near the Mörrum River serve Swedish fika staples — kanelbullar (cinnamon buns), smörgås (open sandwiches), and coffee. Coffee and a pastry: 60–90 SEK.
Vegetarian options are available at most Swedish restaurants (plant-based alternatives are widely stocked). Halal and gluten-free options are less common in rural areas but can be found in Karlshamn.
Where to drink?
Sweden has a strong coffee culture, and fika (a coffee-and-pastry break) is a social institution. Expect to find good filter coffee and espresso at cafés in Karlshamn and small bakeries in the area. A standard coffee costs 30–50 SEK.
Alcohol in Sweden is regulated: beer above 3.5% ABV, wine, and spirits are sold only at Systembolaget (state monopoly shops, closed Sundays and public holidays). Bars and restaurants require a licence and prices are high by international standards — a pint of beer costs 70–90 SEK, a glass of wine 80–110 SEK. The legal drinking age is 18 for bars and restaurants (20 for Systembolaget purchases).
Local and regional beers from Blekinge microbreweries are worth trying. Tap water throughout Sweden is safe to drink and of excellent quality — no need to buy bottled water.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to stay?
Accommodation directly in Asarum is limited. Most visitors stay in Karlshamn or at rural cottages and B&Bs in the surrounding countryside.
- Budget: Hostel and budget hotel options are concentrated in Karlshamn. Karlshamns Stadshotell and smaller guesthouses offer rooms from around 600–900 SEK per night. Camping is available at several sites along the Blekinge coast (150–300 SEK per pitch). A popular alternative is renting a stuga (cabin) at a countryside campsite.
- Mid-range: Hotels in Karlshamn such as Scandic Karlshamn or Best Western Hotell Witt provide comfortable rooms in the 900–1,400 SEK range per night, often including breakfast.
- Upscale / heritage: Upscale hotel options are limited in the immediate area. For a more premium stay, look at countryside manor hotels and B&Bs in the Blekinge countryside, or consider the Hotel Conrad and similar properties in Karlskrona (50 km east). Prices at upscale properties range from 1,500–2,500 SEK per night. Booking in advance is recommended during the June–August high season.
What should you buy?
Asarum has limited shopping — a local ICA or Coop grocery store covers daily needs. For more substantial shopping, Karlshamn offers a small town-centre retail district and the Ekenäsen shopping area.
Local products worth seeking out in Blekinge include:
- Smoked fish: Blekinge has a strong tradition of smoked herring and salmon; smokehouses near the coast sell freshly smoked products.
- Local craft beer: Several microbreweries in Blekinge produce seasonal and local ales; available at Systembolaget (the state alcohol monopoly) and sometimes at farm shops.
- Granite and stonework: Blekinge's granite heritage is reflected in local craft shops that sell small stone items, though this is more of a niche interest.
- Edible souvenirs: Local honey, jams, and chanterelle products from Blekinge farms.
Swedish shops rarely offer bargaining; prices are fixed. Systembolaget is the only retailer permitted to sell alcohol above 3.5% ABV; there is a branch in Karlshamn.
