Kassala

Kassala is a state in eastern Sudan, bordering Eritrea. Its capital, also called Kassala, sits on the banks of the seasonal Gash River at the foot of the Taka Mountains — a striking cluster of granite outcrops rising to around 1,000 metres that hold spiritual significance for local pastoralist communities. The landscape ranges from Nile and Gash riverine plains to semi-arid savanna, and agriculture (notably the fruit gardens around Kassala city) and livestock herding form the economic base. The state is a cultural heartland for the Beja people, particularly the Hadendawa sub-group, known for their traditional sword dance.

November to February is the most comfortable period. The rainy season varies but generally runs June to October in the southern parts.

Roads connect the main towns with bush taxis and buses as the primary public transport. A 4x4 is recommended for rural areas.
