Why visit Vallehermoso?
Vallehermoso is a rural municipality and valley town on the northwestern coast of La Gomera in Spain's Canary Islands. Spanning from the central high-altitude ridge down to the Atlantic Ocean, it covers the largest geographic area of any municipality on the island. The valley floor centers around agricultural terraces, palm groves, and traditional Canarian stone houses, set beneath the vertical basalt neck of Roque Cano.
Historically, Vallehermoso operated as the primary agricultural center of La Gomera, producing bananas, wine, and palm syrup (miel de palma) tapped from native date palms (Phoenix canariensis). Today, the town serves as a quiet staging base for hikers accessing Garajonay National Park and northern mountain trails. It attracts travelers interested in rural village life, trekking, and local gastronomy rather than beach resorts.
The local climate varies significantly by altitude. The upper reaches touch the damp, cloud-covered laurel forest zone, while the valley floor stays warm year-round with average temperatures between 18°C and 26°C. Moist trade winds frequently generate cloud banks over the surrounding peaks during afternoons.
